In this 24fsp vs 30fps vs 60fps comparison I give my totally amateur thoughts on what I think is THE best frame rate for shooting YouTube videos.

What do you think?

Guess the Frames-Per-Second Video Series:

I really like the way this playlist was shot. Great way to show the differences in a streamlined manor. Thank you so much. Just subscribed

Thank you for keeping these short, not adding a bunch of sponsored products or affiliate links. Not going on and on about it and just getting to it. Thank you

This little series is fantastic and something I haven't seen from any other channel. So helpful, thanks!

Great job! I prefer 30 for most case and 60 for slomo!

That was very interesting. I had thought they were 60, 24, 30. The 3rd video actually seemed more jittery to me than the rest of them, and the 2nd one seemed the smoothest to me. Thank you for the great tests and demonstrations.

I had the 24 and 30 mixed up but the 60 really stood out. I’ve been shooting in 24 recently after doing most early stuff in 24 and no one has ever commented one way or the other. I think I may go back to 30. “Cinematic” is one of the most overused terms in video and the type of content I create is not intended to be cinematic anyway.

So I was a bit surprised that the difference between 30 and 60 fps was this noticeable, I assumed up until seeing video 4 that the 30 fps video was the 24 fps one. As someone who wants to release game design tutorials I might just go with 24 fps for a good chunk of my videos, but I'll make sure to go for that crisp 60 fps whenever I'm showcasing an animation or something visually engaging. Now I'm wondering if it would make sense to use multiple kinds of frame rate within the same video, and upload it as a 60 fps video.

The other consideration is the bandwidth on the user side. 60FPS might look great in 4K on a fiber connection, but a phone viewer on 4G might get served only 480p. Or a guy in China on a VPN like me 😆 I agree on the 30 fps being nicer to watch than 24.

I nailed it. I think 30 is such an absolute steal of a frame rate for the little bit of size It takes up. I’ve been toying with 4K 60 on my new 16 pro and i love the smoothness, but always default to 30 for the sake of size

So I'm just getting started on this whole video making this before a trip coming up and wasnt sure about the frame rates i.e. 24 vs 30. I came here, watched all videos and I now know I dont need to dig any further. 30 it is for me too. THanks. Very well put together playlist.

I also like the 30fps the most in this use case (moving subject). Although 60fps is clearly smoother in the background, the "motion blur" in the 30fps feels more natural and adds to the depth of field perception (especially with smaller sensors). This is more in line with how our eyes focus on the subject and perceive the background blurry as well. The 24fps video looks jittery. In summary I would use 30fps when your are filming a subject moving in its environment and 60fps when you are filming a lot of quick moving objects at a larger distance (like a sports game) or when you are filming a landscape from a fast moving object.

I got all 3 correct, however I wasn't 100% sure on the first video has it was 30 or 60 until I saw the 60fps video. When you turn around on the sidewalk that was the clue it was a 60fps along with the car passing you. The 24fps was noticeable when you were riding the scooter. However if this was a fully blind test with nothing to tell me if it was going 24/30/60 i don't think I could tell the differences between 30 and 60fps

I got only the 24 FPS- clip right - having confused the first with the second. Maybe 30 FPS is the best compromise, giving you the opportunity to slow it down to 80% of it's speed, what makes the movements even smoother.
Here in Europe I should shoot with 25/50 /100 FPS (PAL- grid), but for me as a mainly outdoor-shooter 30/ 60/120 gives me more creative freedom. And you can overcome the problem with flickering lights by shooting at 1/50 and 1/100 sec in the PAL- countries, instead of 1/60 and 1/120 sec.

In the 70's there were tests, I think on the Dykstra camera, that showed 60fps effected the viewer's mind to inner regard images as more real.

Thank you so much for this! Its helped me a lot to understand the difference. Now I can see that 30fps is perfectly fine for filming vlogs/YouTube vids without needing 60fps!

This was super helpful! I wish it was all one video in segments rather than 5 different ones but the information is awesome! Thank you!

Yeah I guessed correct, 60 fps is definitely my favorite, but 30 is probably the best for me, easier to work on and smaller file size. 24 fps made me want to throw up with how choppy it was. Thank you!
