WHY PAY MORE? Apple Pencil 1 vs 2

Is the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil THAT MUCH better than the 1st Generation Apple Pencil? I get so many questions about whether there is enough of a difference between the first and second generation Apple Pencils - and the answer is - it depends. Because, the 2nd gen pencil IS better, but the question should be, is it better enough to justify the extra cost. Now, when we look at the price, at least in the US, the difference is $30, but when you look closer it ends up being much more expensive - so how do you choose?

I was confused wheather or not to spend extra money just because of the pencil but you really helped me work that out.

What i like the most about this channel is that you actually say which is better and why, when others channels go with the "Both good, pick whatever you want and thanks for wasting 30mins of your life"
Keep up the great content!

Pencil 2 by all means. Its user experience is significantly better than the first version over a long period of use. The biggest advantage is ability to charge/pair magnetically and just the overall feel of it is so much better

2nd gen way better charging magnetically, also gets damaged less easily (can’t roll off the table) and no parts to lose. These factors don’t justify the crazy price. I’d love to have 2 Pencils (one on mini and one on Pro) but not at that price. I used to have 2 of the gen 1 pencil due to the need to charge it separately. If/when they bring out a Pencil that works on iPhone, I’m there.

Buy it nice or buy it twice -- so true! Another concern for people is whether they are buying old tech that will go obsolete... Once apple stops producing iPad series (as in 9 gen) then the Apple pen 1st gen will also become obsolete. I am thinking the Apple Pen 1st gen only makes sense if getting it super cheap 2nd hand

I actually like drawing with the first gen pencil more because it's lighter, the 2nd one was more tiring to use when drawing. Ofc the wireless charging and magnetic connector is much more convenient to use

You can charge the 1st Gen pencil with your iPhone also and no need to pair with your iPad again, as iPhone is just charging and not pairing

I’m a video creator and a 3D model creator and I have used both and I preferred the first gen

Fourth way to charge Apple Pencil Gen 1… Get a stand which sits on your desk that you plug it into vertically. Don't know why folks never mention this.

As an owner of the Apple Pencil 1 who's been using tablet PCs for years (and digital pens long before Apple finally realized it would be a good idea to create one for iPad), all of this just shows to me that Apple still doesn't understand inking.

I’ve had my iPad Pro 9.7 with my 1st Gen Apple Pencil for years and just due to nostalgia I’m not ready to upgrade yet.
I agree with the charging problem, my pencil never seems to be charged when I want it, especially since I only have one charger for both my iPad and my iPhone.
And for now I don’t actually need to upgrade, it’s still good enough for me as my iPad still runs iPadOS 15 and I’m not doing anything completely professional on my iPad just yet.(Just studying, note taking, taking photos, drawing and of course binge watching YouTube videos)

I also went to my local Apple Store a couple of months ago and tried out the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil. It felt literally JUST LIKE A REAL PENCIL and I don’t remember it making the annoying glass tap sound I hear every single time I put the pencil on my iPad.

Found a way to make 1st gen pencil work on the new ipads that are supposedly compatible only with the 2nd gen and going to continue using it that way. I’d love the 2nd gen pencil but I’m not paying 130$ for a new one when the old one works still.

I have both pencils but prefer the second generation way more over the first because of not only the feel and the double feature and being able to charge on the side of my iPad Air 4 but for the fact that it is so much easier for me to keep track of I loose things so easily plus when I am out and about I can fit it in my purse alongside my iPad and I have a much better drawing experience

Currently have an iPad 9 which has been working well! I have a ZAGG folio keyboard case which is nice because of the magnets in the case. The little cap on my Pencil attaches to my case by magnets and the Pencil itself stays in the little loop thing while it charges. I have multiple cords so I use one to charge my iPad and the other always has the adapter on so I don’t lose it.

Overall, I’d still say the 2nd gen Pencil is better due to its other benefits but the 1st gen is working out fine for me. I plan on upgrading soon enough and giving my current iPad to my dad so I’ll be getting the 2nd gen Pencil soon enough which will be nice for the added benefits. However, I am *NOT* saying the 1st gen is bad. It just depends on what you have.

I had the gen 1 and It was amazing, but once I got the air 4 I thought about upgrading. I waited until black friday and got a gen 2 for $90 which is how much I paid for the first gen. So, I bought it and sold my gen 1 for about 75 bucks.

Your videos are very helpful. Since the battery is important to me, I bought the ipad 9, which is a price performance product. Definitely enough for now, continue until the new pro is introduced.

Thankfully, it really comes down to what device you are using. I can confirm everything that was said in this video. I started with the 2012 Mini and the 1st gen pencil, now I use the M1 Pro and 2nd generation pencil for my digital art.

Simply put, Compatibility and what you're willing to pay dictates what Apple Pencil you will be getting. Good video!

It’s not even a matter of if I want to pay a few dollars more, it’s all about the compatibility of the pencil depending on the device I have. I would 100% go for the 2nd gen, but for that I have to buy an iPad Pro or an Air, no thanks

Even though this comparison is really high quality and professional, it’s useless. No iPad has dual 1st and 2nd generation Apple Pencil support, meaning you wouldn’t be able to choose between the two if you get an iPad; you’d be stuck with one.
