Install Arch Linux The Easy Way With The Official Install Script

I've always argued that the standard command line installation of Arch Linux is easy and anyone can do it (seriously!). But many people fear command line installations, so Arch Linux now comes with a guided menu-based install script that is as easy-to-use as the Ubiquity installer or the Calamares installer.

Guys, beware! The 'archinstall' script has a security flaw. Don't share the script publicly or you will get out'ed like I did:

An excellent way to get rid of the elitists!

Although I can easily install Arch in the CLI, this script is a breeze to operate and can bring Arch a whole pack of new users. Best of both worlds one could say. It feels like a "real" installer and still has this minimalist feel to it.

What a change for Arch Linux. So much simpler to install and less intimidating.

It's nice to see Arch becoming more newbie friendly.

It’s about time they made this! This is so nice to have.
Normally, I like partitioning and setting everything up on my own. Yet, I’m configuring a server and don’t want anything to be misconfigured. So I’m fine with this script.

On bare metal the bootloader it gives you a choice between grub and systemd boot. also, if you have a bigger drive it will ask if you want to separate your /home partition on the "wipe and make the best selection" section.

Wow! This brings me back to the old days of Linux (SLS, Slackware, etc). I remember downloading the OG Linux floppy disk images off of Usenet or FTP sites at my college campus back in 1991/1992 and then taking those home to install Linux on my 80286 machine. The joy and feeling of accomplishment when I actually got a Linux/UNIX login and compiling my computer science C projects on my home PC instead of the campus' UNIX machine was awesome. Doing Arch linux this way isn't quite the same (no 3.5" floppy swapping) but it's darned close to what it was like back then. Of course also, no package systems, it was all on floppy and you didn't have to be connected to the internet (dial-up back then for me). Great video! Thanks!

Old School install certainly teaches about computers / Operating Systems and is recommended for anyone who wants to tinker a bit more and learn.

But this install script is a gift from Arch gods, no need for the hassle and lowers the entry point for new users.

Arch was my first Linux-based distro, where I really feel good. My first Arch install was a little nightmare, because it was just time-wasting. Especially for someone like me who has worked mostly with Windows for more than two decades. I don't need a GUI, but if you want to install Arch on different machines, this build-in script is a huge game changer, in my opinion! I've been using EndervourOS for a while, to install quick a fresh copy of Arch. This script is a big change and helps newbies too. Last but not least: Thanks Arch, I really fell in love with you!

Hey DT, just wanted to say thank you for all of these awesome videos, I really love your channel content and your attitude towards freedom and free software. I especially love your doom emacs content. Anyway thank you :)

This is the 2nd video I've seen where the demo is done on a virtual machine. I wish someone would do the walkthrough on an actual laptop/pc as there are different options that come up when you go through it.

Thank you! I installed Arch on my personal laptop with this. I tried with the CLI a few months ago and although I did everything correctly, I kept getting some weird error that didn't let me boot after installation. Now this works!

Just a heads-up: this script is now available not only on mainline Arch but also on SystemRescueCD which is not only Arch-based but also has a graphical (Xfce) live environment, while also still keeping Arch repositories and not using anyone else’s.

I tried installing Arch in 2016 with little to knowledge about Linux. Just recently I decided to get back into it so I installed Manjaro. I’ll probably install Arch again now that it’s easier and know way more.

The saving on /home/dt didn't work, since the script does *nothing* to the system untill you tell it to install, so you can always recheck your config to avoid system breakage. So to save that permenantly, you would have to store it on a flash drive, or put it in the ramfs of the install medium and manually upload it to somewhere.

This will save me tons of time when I decide to install Arch on my laptop or PC.
