Today I made my mailbox smart with the YoLink Outdoor Contact Sensor and paired it with ALEXA, added an Alexa Routine, and now my mailbox tells me when I’ve Got Mail.

Great intro! I've got one in my mailbox too. NOW the challenge is to use the constituent pieces available (YoLink app, IFTTT, Alexa, plus ???) to build the state machine that will 1) tell you when the mail arrives 2) allow you to query if the mail has arrived 3) not repeat the bogus "arrived" announcement when the wife goes out to check or retrieve it, put outgoing mail in the box, etc...

I use this for the gate. But using it for the mail box is pretty neat.

I use the Yolink Inddor Motion Sensor stuck to the Rear of my ABS Mailbox, and it works great. Alexa Routines are great to do all sorts of things when my Mail box is opened. Battery life has been about a year. I am 300 feet away from my Yolink Hub.

I like your videos. In an earlier video you showed how you set up the YoLink door sensor (the white one) on your mailbox and then had it announce You Have Mail. In that video you used the: Messaging > Send Announcement > You Have Mail. You can choose which Echo devices you want to announce the "You Have Mail" from, I find this to be the better way to announce my mail has arrived, because you may be in a totally different part of your house when the announcement is made. We have 8 Echo devices in our home, so when our mail is delivered it doesn't matter where we are in the house we hear the "Mail Has Arrived". That is just a thought for your followers. Also, we live in a rural area and have had a problem with mail theft. I also have Ring camera's that are directed toward my mail box, I setup a Routine in the Alexa app to record when my mailbox is opened (I have caught people looking in my mailbox, for local authorities).

Also, I noticed on your video at 6:32 that you said to go into the Alexa app and Disable and Restart the Skills app for YoLink to discover the new device. You do not have to do this if you already have the YoLink skill on your Alexa account. You only need to go to: Devices > Press the (+) sign in the upper right corner > the press Add Device > scroll to the bottom of the page and press (Other) > then press Discover Devices, this will discover any YoLink devices you have recently attached to your YoLink app.

By the way, if you have a new device and you have added the new Skill for the device to your Alexa account, and it is not listed on Popular Brands page of Add Device from the Device page on the Alexa app, you just have to follow the same directions as I stated above to get the new device up and running in the Alexa app (Remember you must add the Skill for the Device before you try and add it to the Alexa app).

Thanks for the clip, Todd. Why not install the sensor inside the mailbox for weather?

Will this work for a patio dining set? Hoping to prevent bandits from stealing my expensive table & chiars.

Is there an outdoor door sensor that’s available outdoors like the ring outdoor sensor . That would be an easier install I think ? Thanks

Thanks. Had a bit of trouble. Orbi router, ...can't turn off 5 ghz. Have an old dir-655, 2.4 ghz only, in my craft room, which worked. Contact sensor seemed to be worked until I mounted unit under plastic mailbox. About 500 ft. Said good, 91 dbg signal. Yolink answered tech support with NO hold time. Asked me to push link button, flashed green....not connected. Apparently a bit too far. Move speaker hub to front window, so about 350 ft....but can't hear it very well in there but alexa link to my main room will do the trick. Wish you had included settings for contact sensor, not very intuitive. FYI: Click on "Smart" at the bottom of the app> then click on Automation near he top (also says scene) . When: "Door Open". Behavior: Say "You've got mail" Another FYI: Tech said the regular hub has a bit more range than the Speaker Hub, and also has an ethernet port (not just wifi) So..a few glitches, but working now.

I just use an indoor sensor for my mailbox. As long as it's mounted inside the mailbox it's more than protected enough from the elements. What I don't like about the outdoor sensor is the long cable. I'm wondering if I coul cut the cord and use shrink tube to shorten the cable for use on my gates.

Great channel and so easy to follow in this set up for your mail box to Alexa.
One question, how can you make Alexa announce to more than one device. I have an Echo in one room and a Ziggy in another room and would like the announcement to come over both at the same time. Can this be done?
More YoLink videos, and yes I subscribed several months ago!
Thanks

Awesome videos, since I started watching you’re videos I have picked up the speaker hub, freezer temp-humidity, door sensors and motion today.
Although I run mostly Apple, I like the long range having an acre of property runs into distance issues with devices. (As you’re aware of ). I have tried by hand the door sensor inside the mail box and works with no problem, although I think I’m going to go with a motion detector being delivered tomorrow on the inside and to the back of the mailbox. Not sure if this will work any better but was hoping when the put mail in the won’t be hitting the door opener plus it will be out of view. My question as I am not familiar with the apps yet is if you can set up the speaker hub to alert “You’ve Got Mail” without Alexa? Just the IOS app as notification to the speaker hub. By the way Sir, you are correct by stating one of the easiest to connect to devices !!!
Just wished they showed up in the HomeKit app. The other thing that almost stop me from giving this a try was their wall plugs and switches 10 Amp, so many smart plugs now are 15Amp 1800 watts. Just didn’t want to go down that rabbit hole of which app controls what. Lol
Well for sure thanks to you I gave it a try and am pleased I did. I definitely subscribed to you’re channel and will be thumbs using you’re video’s. Keep up the Good Work.

Hi, I just stumbled upon your video on finding a good way to detect when the mail arrives in a longish distance and this seems like a great solution! A year later, is this still working well and how's the battery life on it? Never heard of YoLink before this, but seems fascinating and unique in their distance!
