Steakhouse Rules, Explained

Steakhouses are not like other restaurants: they're more like clubs with their own rules and conventions. Don't be caught breaking any of these rules when dining at one.

Special thanks to Keen's in NYC.

so wait let me make sure I get it

1. don't dress like a slob
2. order what you want
3. don't order a bunch of add on crap just because the lady offers it
4. enjoy what you ordered

seems unorthodox but I guess I can try it

So pretty much, you walk in not looking like a homeless person, order what you want, the way you want it, and refuse what you don't want... Man, how have I been alive for this long?

Dude at editorial meeting that morning, "I'm gonna eat a hundred fifty dollar lunch all by myself, and be able to expense it!"

Is it just me or did I not learn anything?

These weren't lessons, this was common sense...
1. Wear nice clothes to a nice restaurant....
2. Don't order stuff you won't eat
3. Don't by the most expensive alcohol.
4. Don't add useless condiments

Rules for a steakhouse: Act like a rich, arrogant elitist but be as cheap as possible, spending the bulk of your money on the Mallard reaction

You know what gets you treated better than being in an uncomfortable suit? Going in flip flops for the 20th time that year and having tipped well the 19 times before. They will all remember you. Especially the only people in any restaurant that really matter... the bartenders.

is it just me or did this video make going to a steakhouse completely undesirable?

In theory I agree with the idea of dining well dressed. In reality most occasions when I have an opportunity to dine at a fine steakhouse are when I am on vacation and are impromptu opportunities. And with the kids. So I end up being dressed more like a tourist in shorts, etc. I have never been turned away. I can't even really say I have been treated poorly. The kids are well behaved. We don't overburden the staff. And tip commiserate with service which is always well.

"There's no right or wrong answer." Yes, yes there is and it's well-done.

Sometimes, and ONLY if it is a house made sauce, do you use the steak sauce. But you NEVER put it directly on the meat, only on the plate to dip it in. Quite a few steak houses are proud of their house made steak sauce and want you to try it. The ones that do make their own sauces are worth taking up on that.

Ok think I got it. Walk in in jean shorts and crocs and order myself a diet red bull. Fill up on bread then order the prime rib, well done Tabasco on the side. Also, no matter where the wine is from do your best to order it in a French accent.

He ordered it rare, and it was cooked medium. (And he didn't send it back !)
