Who Does it Best? Ford BlueCruise vs Tesla Autopilot

Ford fans swear by blue cruise saying it is better than autopilot so I tested both of them back to back on the same route to see which was better.

The difference in price is due to the Mustang being much better constructed and doesn't rely on the new owner to take on the function of QC. I just rented both a 3 and Y and came back to my Mach-E GT Performance with a whole new appreciation for it's quality. I also have a Jaguar I-Pace and it's incredibly nice.

Latest firmware has like 1/10th of the phantom braking. At least I’ve noticed.

I respect your scientific method. Like you said I gone from regular AP to enhanced AP to fsd 11.4.4. Fsd is a huge improvement over the basic in phantom braking etc. 15k is a lot for fsd but I would buy a used Tesla for cheap and add fsd to it. Life without fsd sucks imo.

I rented a 2022 Model 3 Performance off Turo last year that still had USS. I took it on a 200 mile + trip, my first time using AP and I experienced a lot of phantom braking. It was my first time ever using it, it certainly scared the heck out of me.

I haven't laughed so hard as when I saw you sitting in the gaming chair at the side of the road! You made my day. Also, I've had my Tesla Y/LR for 3 months, and only today noticed that it edged slightly to the left side of the lane while passing a truck. I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it! Thanks for the confirmation it actually does that.

I’ve driven a total of 45k miles in 2 Teslas since 2019 and prob around 4-5k autopilot miles. I have only experienced phantom braking on the NJ GSP North at I believe exit 54 when approaching an overpass. The braking now is a lot less strong than it was in 2019 for sure but was still happening .. at least it was 6 months ago when I last drove thru there.

Nice review. I am on my second Tesla now and phantom braking is much reduced compared to several years ago, even though my newest car does not have radar. I do have a question for you. My first car had "full self driving" and my newest car has basic "autopilot", which like you I think is good enough. That said, one thing that neither vehicle seems to do is "avoid road hazards". Examples include potholes, small animals (squirrels, birds, etc), rocks, broken off mufflers, etc). The other thing that neither car does is give way to obstacles on the side of the road. Examples include cars that are parked right up to the righthand white stripe, pedestrians or bicycles riding on the side of the road, or the occasional building or tree that comes right up to the side of the road. As a result, I have to take over control to avoid these hazards, which then often results in admonishment by the Tesla autopilot complaining I have crossed the median at which time it punishes me by turning off lane-keep assist for the rest of that driving session. These issues are huge as far as I am concerned, as I live in an area with lots of parked cars and people/bicycles strolling along the side of the road, which along with lots of wildlife means autopilot is a non-starter. The lack of in-lane hazard avoidance is still a problem, even on major highways. Do you know how the most up to date "full self driving" and Blue Cruise handles these problems? Thank you in advance for the information.

I purchased a 2020 used model 3 and the previous owner had paid for FSD. To my surprise, the price of the vehicle was around the same price as vehicles without it. When I checked the trade-in value, you are correct when you say you don't really get much more for trade with FSD. So you are also right when you say if Tesla doesn't really value their own software, why should we purchase it for so many thousands of dollars? Mine already had it but if it didn't I never would have purchased it either. FSD still needs a lot of work and makes many mistakes but I do enjoy autopilot much more. Nice video this was. Many good points.

Openpilot is better than bluecruise, cheaper, more comfortable, and more features. However no youtubers talk about them even though they were regraded as the best ADAS system ( at least in 2020 )

I own the Mach-E, 2021, have 43, 000 something miles on the clock so far. You are testing a new version of Blue Cruise that a large majority of people don't have in their car, myself included. So I can't speak on the version you are running, but I do find the current version tends to hug the right side of the lane, and I hate it... Having 100% hands free driving is pretty cool though, no "put pressure" garbage like the other makers do.

I still believe Tesla's overall software package is far superior to Blue Cruise. I've actually been thinking super hard about trading in my MachE for the Model Y.

I own a 2021 Mach E GT Performance and the Blue Cruise I have is ver. 1.0 without lane change . It often slows down on turns when one pedal braking is on. It sometimes slows me down on turns I know my former Fusion Hybrid could take at speed (35-45 MPH). The new version has been shown in other videos to slow the car down on highway level turns and move away from trucks. All of these can be overpowered by the driver without leaving any version of Blue Cruise.

I do not know what is going on with your 2023 but I can use lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control on almost all roads and speeds, even local streets, down to 15 MPH. The "almost" being it often fails on one lane roads. I just have to nudge the wheel every 20 seconds or so (it will warn you). You may have not have some of the settings correct for this mode.

Full self driving is worth it in my use cases, all comes down to your personal usage

Tip on the Mach-E - you only need to tap the turn signal, not do a full depress. The car will merge and no need to deactivate the turn signal.

At 11:39 you get an “Adaptive Cruise not Available” warning. If you look on the instrument cluster, you’ll see an amber warning light. This indicates that the forward vision camera cannot make out objects well so ACC and Collision Avoidance are turned off. I find this happens sometimes when the sun is shining directly into the camera: bright and lower to the horizon. As I understand it, Tesla has the same issue with glare, but I cant know for sure.

I have found over the last year that phantom braking occurs far less frequently for me than in the past. Even if it does happen, it is more of a brief hesitation and is not affecting surrounding vehicles anymore. I guess it can be an advantage and a curse with Tesla trying to be good everywhere and I sure appreciate that you can use it anywhere with lane lines. Blue Cruise and Super Cruise do a good job in their approved areas but think it is a huge challenge to expand those areas for them.

Great test! I'd recommend you test these systems (also Cadillac's SuperCruise and others that seems decent) in more conditions. Can we get tests during the day and night, dry and in the rain, with light and heavy traffic, in areas with roadwork, curvy roads (where BlueCruise used to fail), and so on? I think people would be interested to see how capable these systems are in all kinds of conditions in total, not just on a sunny day on a road with little traffic. I haven't see any YouTube creators testing self-driving systems in a systematic way like this yet! keep up the great content!

My new Tesla MYP 2023 does not exit standard Autopilot mode when I change lanes, it stays activated and adjusts for traffic at any speed, and smart cancels the turn indicators which I like a lot. It works really well so far. Tried in longer trips in the Coachella Valley and LA areas. No phantom braking so far. Latest software updates.

It looks like the Tesla was starting to slow down at 17:19 for the exit just before you took over. You can see the green regen braking bar and the max speed dropped to 55 MPH before the take over.
