This didn't work for me as there were NO USB SETTINGS visible anywhere. What DID Work was going into Settings/About, clicking on Build a few times which puts you into Developer Mode. From there you can find Default USB Configuration where you can select Transfer Files. Crazy that this is not accessible from the regular settings menu. I'm sharing this as I wasted an hour finding this out. Hope it helps.

Spent half a day on this now. I can't access/find USB Preferences on my Android, it doesn't seem to exist. Annoyingly when I first had the phone I could connect fine to my Windows laptop, but no longer. And every other youTube or web item doesn't work

My problem is that I can not switch from connected device to this device or USB in your case. I am trying to install HP USB printer on my Samsung tablet and I cant as it wont let me choose USB controlled by this device (tablet) and I cant see damn printer..

Specifically, my phone automatically has "controlled by This device" selected instead of the other way around, and then proceeds to not let the computer to control it when I try selecting the other way. I was hoping to easily transfer my Ethernet connection to my phone, but it doesn't work

got the Samsung tab a7 lite and same issues everyone is having. after 30-minutes of searching the internet, updating some settings as I have seen and there being NO FIX for this, returned. I'l stick with my Apple products, at least I know how to transfer files.

My android phone settings do not include a "connected devices" section. I can connect my Android phone to my PC with a USB cable OK, and the "my computer" display does show my phone in the section it shows disk drives. But clicking on the phone displays a "this folder is empty" message. I can get the phone files to display (and to be capable of being transferred between the phone and PC) by going to the "DeveloperOptions" section of "settings", then to "Default USB configuration", then selecting the "transferring files / Android Auto" option just as shown in your video. The problem I am having is that even though I select the "transferring files" as the default, it doesn't "stick" and I have to go through this reset process each time to get to the files. Any suggestions as to how to make this selection permanent? (My android phone is a Samsung Galaxy 9plus)

1:19 how do you get that option on a phone that doesn't show the controlled by options?

Under connected devices, USB isn't even there. I already allowed debugging but it doesn't let me choose what starts the connection. Ths device or my computer options are both greyd out and unable to be checked.

I'm having to send files 1 at a time, over bluetooth and it is very slow and very tedious.

When did "plug n play" die??

I can't transfer files from my phone to my computer via bluetooth nor USB. So I have to uploadthem into a dropbox, and then download them onto my computer from the web.

Perfect! In USB Preferences I was choosing Connected Device then Fine Transfer and it wouldn't connect. But choosing No Data Transfer first allowed my Fire HD Tablet to connect and then was able to switch to File Transfer. Thanks so much.

1:21 I have a Nokia G100 Android; when I plug in a USB flash drive, or memory stick, and try to switch to "This device", it says "Couldn't switch".

i know this video is 2 years old, but i wanted to say i don't have any of the options in USB preferences available.
my phone says "can't switch". i tried turning on "charge the connected device" and it says "couldn't switch" and all the USB modes of connection are blocked off for me, so i can't select them. how to do sort that out?
it can't be anything to do with a faulty cable, because i hadn't used this cable until recently, and the port on my PC isn't damaged as it can easily connect to flash drives and external hard drives. and my phone charges well enough.
