"In case of necessity, anyone, even a non-baptized person, with the required intention, can baptize, by using the Trinitarian baptismal formula. The intention required is to will to do what the Church does when she baptizes. The Church finds the reason for this possibility in the universal saving will of God and the necessity of Baptism for salvation." (CCC 1256)

How To Baptize
If you find yourself in one of these situations, be bold! Allow the Holy Spirit to work within you, and follow these three basic steps:
1. Pour water three times over the candidate’s head, or immerse the candidate three times in water, while simultaneously pronouncing:
2. “Name, I baptize you in the name of the Father (pour water or immerse), and of the Son (pour water or immerse a second time), and of the Holy Spirit (a third time).”
3. It is also desirable that, as far as possible, one or two witnesses to the baptism be present.

It must be kept in mind that this type of baptism performed by laypeople should only be administered to people in an emergency situation. If the person recovers and returns to full health, then that person should present themselves to the nearest parish and explain their situation so that they can be fully welcomed into the Catholic Church.

Some actionable items for each of us:
1. We learn through the Catechism that it is the right and duty of every Catholic to baptize in an emergency anyone desiring it.
2. It's never a bad idea for each of us to have a card in our wallets or purses: "In case of emergency, please call a priest."

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven, and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen

Robert, it has occurred to me while watching this that I should add a small bottle of holy water to the emergency first aid/trauma kit I always carry in my car. It’s something I’ve never thought of doing, nor have I ever had the need of it. I think, however, it would be a good idea.

We were taught this in Catholic grade school (Holy Cross nuns, Indiana, USA). When I was 11 or 12, home alone with my mother, she miscarried. I carried the fetus in the palm of my hand to the kitchen sink and baptised Thomas. In retrospect, I can imagine that the fetus was no longer living --- but it was what I had been taught and it came to me at that time it was what I needed to do! Also, around the same age, most of my large family were in our BelAir station wagon trying to outrun a tornado (!) While my father drove on the wrong side of the street like a bat out of Hades, my mother turned from the front seat and lead us (several children ages around 4 through around 16 years) in the Act of Contrition. We then prayed the Rosary. These 2 experiences are so beautiful to me--to realize how well were taught!

I wish I had known the perfect act of contrition when I was working in nursing homes. I used to say the rosary or divine mercy walking up and down the corridors at night. My Godfather prayed the act of contrition for his brother, my uncle Michael, during the last moments, and I know how important that was. Honestly, this might be the most important video you have ever done.

Many moons ago, when it was known that a baby being born was going to die, even some Jewish doctors were known to baptize babies.

@11:28 ..."Death isn't something that us Catholics are afraid of. Death is deeper union with God." 🙏

I have said this version of the Act of Contrition since the 50s, however there is one word that has changed and I think it makes a difference. A "they" has been put in where an "I"used to be. It is, "because I offend thee my God" referring to my part in not turning from the sin but doing it instead of saying "because they offend thee my God" referring to the sin like they happened without my participation or consent. This is one of those little changes that tries to distance us from responsibility.

In ten years I will be dead, but it will be sooner. I treasure each hour and hope God will go with the ten year plan.

Very important to recite the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the dying every day.

A couple of points from this octogenarian American: I learned when I was a child that for a valid baptism it suffices to pour water on the head/forehead even once, saying while pouring, "I baptize thee in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost." Neither name nor Amen are necessary but do not affect the validity of the Sacrament. In case one does not know whether the dying person has been validly baptized, one should precede with "If this is valid...." since it is one of the Sacraments that cannot be repeated without sacrilege. Your Act of Contrition is the way I learned it these many years ago, but I have never heard it called a "perfect" Act of Contrition. It is still requested by the priest at the conclusion of the Sacrament of Confession.
Good advice for all Catholics to keep in mind. Thank you.

Another great thing to know!!! I know the Act of Contrition because I say it at every Confession, but did not think of reciting it with someone dying. But … what a blessing for them if you are there and can bring them to turn to God for mercy, at that moment or hour.
I’m glad you thought of those things! Hopefully with the help of the Holy Spirit, if critical moments like that come I can remain calm enough and not let panic wipe it out of my mind.

Tks Robert, great to know if one was put in that situation.
We would be in the wilderness without you. God Bless.

This is so good to know … thank you!!!
I would have said the words correctly, but only used the water once. Now I know to pour it three times and when. Wonderful to know!!!
