Venom is actually not evil. The symbiote species feeds off the adrenaline of the host. The other symbiotes would just drain hosts but Venom would keep the host alive for continued food. His fellow symbiotes trapped him for this and Peter mistook his container as a machine that makes new costumes for the capture heroes during the Secret Wars arc. His hatred of Spiderman came from being rejected by Peter.

The point of Spider-Man villains in most of the comics is that despite all the things they do they are still human. It’s another reason why Peter doesn’t just up and kill them. We are supposed to feel empathy for them just like Peter does.
