In the Avatar comics, Azula loses her mind once again in the forgetful valley, firebending at Aang and Zuko, convinced her mother made them lead her here, before Katara finally steps in to restrain Azula, tired of trying to see the good in her
But suddenly they are ambushed by flower throwing stars that are dodged by Aang and Sokka but grazes Katara, distracting her from her waterbending
Katara wonders if the forest is defending itself from Azula’s disturbance before another wave of throwing stars comes for the group
She notices that the flowers hitting Sokka’s boomerang are shattering like ice, proving that someone is bending the water in the flowers and even the vines as they head for Aang and Sokka saves him just in time with his boomerang
The vines go for Sokka as well but he is SHOCKED when he is saved by Azula, who says the more peasants fighting for her the better
Zuko becomes trapped by the vines and Aang helps free him, dodging vines coming for himself in the process
The whole group turn to see what seems like the entire forest heading towards them but Katara proves herself as a masterful waterbender, focusing and taking control of both the leaves and vines in an intricate display of plant bending and tells the mysterious waterbender TO SHOW THEMSELF

The world is divided into four nations -- the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads -- each represented by a natural element for which the nation is named. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation. Only the Avatar is the master of all four elements. The ruthless Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power, the Avatar, has disappeared ... until now. His tribe soon discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.

While plant bending is very cool, she didn’t discover squat. Swamp benders bended the plants of the swamp and even Hama taught Katara how to use plants in water bending, albeit in a less plant bending way and more so just stealing the water from them but still

Katara didn't discover anything! Plantbending already existed in ATLA in the Swamp and many other Waterbenders have done it before katara was even born.
