From my 1st Patreon Q&A.

A Patron asked: "What is your advice for finding a sane, sound therapist?"
"Does a fruitful psychotherapeutic relationship require the therapist to
have temperamental compatibility or shared interests with the patient?"
"Was there ever a time when you saw a therapist of some kind?"

Finding a Good Therapist

1. Psychotherapist: Well versed in psychotherapeutic practices and also sufficiently educated scientifically to be able to understand the scientific literature as it pertains to mental health. Received a Ph.D. in an American psychological association approved school of clinical psychology (operating under the boulder model)

2. See a couple of them and find someone that listens to you and whom you feel comfortable telling the truth to. If you can't tell him the truth, you won't get anywhere

3. They shouldn't solve the problems for you or even give you advice (although sometimes that can be helpful). They should help you understand what problem it is that you're facing, and help you articulate your vision of mental health and what you'd like to attain in psychotherapy, and who helps you strategize towards that end

4. It's difficult to work with a therapist who is less intelligent than you are. A lot of what a psychotherapist does is help you strategize, and to do that, they need to be able to think analytically with the same degree of complexity that you are capable of.

The sad thing is many people who need counselling are broke and need to make the right therapist choice the first time, not 5-10 sessions later.

I think the most difficult thing aside from finding an individual who is optimally balanced in all four functions of consciousness obviously, is perhaps finding a soul who genuinely does not wish to impose their opinions and beliefs onto you. Perhaps what I've been really wanting or missing, is not actually a good therapist, but a good lover, an authentic friend.

In my experience, the therapists I've seen, needed therapy themselves. In one particular case, she had a screw loose. Best therapists I've ever seen and helped me through depression... my mirror.

don't see a therapist who's not on your level in terms of knowledge and IQ - FACTS! I've always felt this way but it's nice to hear JP validate this

Qualifications mean you know how to study other peoples work, write an essay and interpret research which is spurious at best.
The best therapists are the ones who have worked on theirselves, can sit with themselves are embodied, understand and encompass compassion and can sit through a challenge. Ask your therapist how much actual psychotherapy they've had. I will not sit with someone who hasn't bared their soul and expect me to bare mine.

Finding someone who’s smarter than me is not hard per se but it is expensive. Often psychotherapists suggest something to me and I’m constantly “Yes, I thought of that but then I thought this and this and concluded that can’t be the problem...”

I tend to explore things from so many angles that it’s difficult to find/afford a psychotherapist who sees an angle I haven’t considered yet.

i sicken myself saying this, but i have not yet found a therapist that can speak to me on my level of thought. i find myself dumbing my issues down just to get some sort of response. what upsets me more is that over the past year of my breakdown not one of them have looked at me and asked me how i am and if i need something urgently. im staring at the abyss and my therapist is next to me filling out her generic forms to find out why im not crying

"You shouldn't have a therapist you're smarter than. "
"I have never seen a therapist "
So like since we've already established that Jordan Peterson is a smarter therapist than most can I please just see him?😂

This has given me an open mind. Many men that I’ve pursued or dated have told me that I need therapy and I completely agreed with them. Don’t wanna go through my whole life battling depression instead I wanna face it head on.

Therapists are just people, and the quality varies widely. It’s a bad label. You could easily be better off talking with a bricklayer, or businessman, grocery clerk, or person on the street. This I promise you. Depends on if you want empathy, or someone who can help you strategize and help solve problems. If they don’t have the answers to your questions, and don’t seem interested/capable of solving what you want to solve, you’ll know.

I would pay so much to have a session with someone like JBP. Just to get like 5 specific questions answered.

Would it work if we created a personality test that therapists and psychologists would take and post on a providers website. Then someone seeking to be a patient would take a different personality test, after taking the test the patient would be given results of therapists and psychologists that would best fit with each other’s personality.
Setting parameters for what a good match would be, would be a start, I have no idea, I’m a doctor 👨🏻‍⚕️ not a
