The way the torpedo pushes through the shield slowly before detonating and the shield still containing the explosion ON THE INSIDE until the blast propagates through the ship far enough to disable the shield generator and only then the explosion bursts outward

whoever made those VFX shots

fucking GOD TIER

That's it... the director of this film is basically the only person I'd trust to make a Warhammer 40, 000 movie and not ruin it.

I just love how the Atreides soldiers react to the hopelessness of the situation, with all the death and destruction happening around them and that many of their friends and comrades are dead or dying, and knowing that they were all likely to die, they meet their enemy resolutely and stoically on the hellish field of battle without hesitation and with skill. Just goes to show why the emperor feared House Atreides military so much, and thus why it was one of the reasons he wanted to kill that family off so badly.

This scene does an amazing job backing up how each army was described beforehand.

The Atreides soldiers are disciplined and well-organized even in an incredibly dire situation.

When the Harkonnens go on the attack, they charge like a vicious mob rather than an organized unit

And the Sardaukar are absolutely ruthless and efficient, wiping out a well-trained unit of soldiers like it’s nothing.

Josh Brolin nailed the role of Gurney. Just nailed it. You see his absolute hatred of Harkonnens on his face when he looks up, followed by a smile as he's about to go fight them. After all these years he gets he'll get some payback. If you know his backstory it makes perfect sense. Denis managed to convey that without any lengthy dialogue. Brilliant

I can’t watch this scene and not get choked up when Gurney shouts “With me!” and the Atreides bagpipes begin to play as the doomed soldiers charge with discipline to their deaths. There is something so desperately heroic in the scene and in that moment. The score truly complimenting the images onscreen complimenting the actors.

2:04 I've said it before and I'll say it again absolutely my favorite part of the entire film, the way Gurney walks up to those 2 Harkonnens kills them turns to his troops and shouts "With me! WITH ME!" as he leads the charge with the bagpipes blasting is the finest example of "If I am to die, Then I'm taking so many of you with me"

I remember watching dune at the movies with my gf and buddies and when Gurney yelled “WITH ME” me and the guys stood up and we’re wooing so loud everyone else in the auditorium got a good laugh out of it I’ll never forgot it

The fact these guys are in the future with light travel and all sorts advance tech still play bagpipes and go into battle with nothing but blades says how badass they are

This sequence is a great example of what good filmmaking is. The point of the fight between Gurney and the two Harkonnens is to show how Gurney is able to inspire confidence in his troops. This is why the camera is placed so that we see the fight from the perspective of the Atreides soldiers, allowing us to appreciate Gurney's sheer skill in combat the way that the soldiers would see it. The close-up of Gurney when he says the line adds so much intensity, and makes it feel as though he is saying it directly to us. Finally, the shot of Gurney charging into battle, with the Atreides soldiers running behind him (which is again shot from the perspective of the soldiers) shows Gurney's success in inspiring his troops.

Absolute cinematic perfection.

0:48 I love how the the explosion is held back by the shield for a second or two. So much care was put into this movie.

I love how the Atreides soldiers react to the Sardaukar. They completely turn their backs on the Harkonnen, like "yeah, no. These guys are way more of a threat than you ever will be"

“Certainty of death, small chance of success, what are we waiting for?”

2:10 one of the most epic moments in this entire movie.

I love how graceful the combat looks. To be effective, you have to have slow smooth blade movements rather than using power and speed otherwise it won't break through the shields. Makes for some very interesting choreography

Something so perfect about this scene is how the Atreides soldiers on the staircase maneuver themselves. The unarmored troops have spears to keep the Harkonnens as far away as possible, while the armored troops are wielding swords because even if their shields are breached they still have armor. Just masterful choreography and visual story telling
