Edit: Their marriage is over, just not legally. Karl would have agreed to an open marriage but Simone would not. They're not stopping the other from seeing other people because there is no point. That's not an open marriage.
Karl being sick also doesn't make it an open marriage because he's dying. Her being a caretaker to a dying man is not the same thing as being a wife.
They were not staying together no matter what, so they're not an open marriage.
