Thomas definitely suffered from PTSD due to the war and his horrific job in that war, as did most of the survivors of WW1. But Grace was literally the only thing that gave his already hollow existence the tiniest bit of meaning. Once she dies, that tiny bit of life inside of Thomas dies with her, and he becomes a walking dead man with no other motives but greed and destruction.
