I started getting into cooking when I was 10. Every Christmas and birthday I would get something cooking related. Read as much as you can and cook often. Even if you decide later that it's not the career you want, you'll always be the life of the party, making great food for everyone to eat. You'll also have the ability to cook home made food for your family and friends, which is much healthier than a lot of restaurants. Also, listen to my audio lectures found on our main Stella Culinary site.

I like cooking because everytime I cook even just a Little bit of Snack for my Family My Cooking makes them happy and even my brother who doesn't like healthy foods when I told him I cooked them he would eat it... which I know is really satisfying when your a cook/chef ... It has a certain feeling that makes you happy when you know that you are also making someone happy

Nice job Chef Jacob! I was searching for a good example of technique, found a number of hack jobs, and then found your video. Nice! I hope to include a link to it in an article on food cost control and appropriate trim on fruits, veggies, meats & fish.
I appreciate your technique on the melon.

What's demonstrated in this video is how to cut a watermelon to precise measurements, something that would be required of you in a professional kitchen. But as professionals, it's our job to minimize waste. In this instance, all watermelon flesh scrap would be used for marinades, gazpacho or blended up for a cocktail special. The rind is trimmed of the green (which can be toxic) and pickled for a garnish (I have a separate video on pickled watermelon rind).

I don't. I trim them down and pickle them. In fact, pickled watermelon rind is an amazing garnish. I have a separate video on how to pickle watermelon rind posted to this channel if you're interested.

You're in luck. This YouTube channel has over 40 knife skill specific videos; everything from how to hold a chefs knife, sharpen your knife, break down a whole chicken, vegetable prep, and another video on seeded melons. If you're interested in learning, all that info can be found right here.

Being a Chef is a very broad job. It means you run an entire restaurant/kitchen. Becoming a chef takes years of hard work, starting out at an entry level kitchen job and slowly working your way up. There's a certain "meditative" quality to making the same dish 1, 000 times, each time striving for perfection. When you're a chef, if you get board with a dish, you can just change it. The difficult aspects of the job are long hours, staying creative, managing people, and maintaining profitability.

Mr Burton, I enjoyed the video! Thanks for posting it. I have a question: I'm trying to eat a cleaner diet and I love watermelon. I am a truck driver, so often I'm eating on the move. . My concern is the seeds in the watermelon. Is there a technique to cut and eliminate the seeds ? Thanks in advance!

Next time I'll do a quick tap routine, sing a song, and tell a few jokes. Either you want to learn this technique or not. It's not grade school; you don't have to be here, you don't have to watch this video, and there is no test afterwards. But if you want to learn the techniques that a professional chef uses in a restaurant kitchen, this is the YouTube channel for you. If you have no desire to learn about cooking on a professional level, then you've ended up in the wrong place.

He keeps saying "You've seen this technique many times before." No I haven't. Seriously, this is the first time I have watched a video about slicing... anything. I'm not lying.

Outside of buying a seedless watermelon like the one used in this video, I'm not sure there's a good way to cut out watermelon seeds.

Peeling and slicing a watermelon is "too much playing with food?" Do you even cook?
