Worth clarifying how as an American our visas work in Europe. There are still some limits to be aware and plan around as a backpacker. There is a 90 day limit within a consecutive 180 day period that we can stay in the Schengen zone which covers most of the EU. You can balance that with trips out of the Schengen zone: UK, Eastern Europe, Balkans and North Africa. This rule is enforced to varying degrees but technically could get you deported.
