What does Uninsured Motorist Coverage mean? Uninsured Motorist Coverage is a form of insurance coverage that may be bundled into your auto insurance policy. It exists because there are many drivers on the road without any insurance coverage.

How does Uninsured Motorist Coverage work? If you’re involved in a car accident with another driver who is driving without insurance, and the uninsured driver caused the accident, your Uninsured Motorist Coverage may cover the cost to repair or replace your damaged vehicle. Additionally, if you’re injured in an accident caused by an uninsured driver, your uninsured motorist coverage should pay for your medical bills, lost wages, and other economic damages that you experience as a result of the accident.

In most states, your uninsured motorist coverage will apply to hit-and-run accidents where another driver hits you and then flees the scene of the accident.

Keep in mind that the laws regarding UM coverage vary from state to state. In some states, you have to show that the uninsured driver’s vehicle made physical contact with your vehicle for the coverage to apply.

How can you find out whether your existing insurance policy includes UM coverage? In some states, UM coverage is automatically included in your auto insurance policy unless you specifically sign a document rejecting it. This is often referred to as a “rejection letter.” If you’re injured in an accident by an uninsured driver or a hit and run driver, check with your insurance provider to see if you have UM coverage, even if you don't believe you have it.

To determine whether your policy includes UM coverage, you need to get a copy of your latest policy declarations page. You can get one by calling your insurance provider and asking them to fax or email a copy of your policy declarations page to you. You can also download a copy from your online insurance account if you have one.

If your insurance company says that you do not have UM coverage, ask them to provide you with a copy of the rejection letter that you or the policy holder signed rejecting UM coverage. If the insurance carrier cannot provide you with a signed rejection letter, the law may require that your insurance carrier provide you with UM coverage regardless of whether you paid the additional premiums for it.

In this video, we'll look at an actual policy declarations page and I'll show you how to determine the limits of your UM coverage. I'll also show you an example of a signed letter confirming a policy holder's rejection of UM coverage.

How much will uninsured motorist coverage cost you?

Your premium will depend on a number of factors, including the insurance provider that you buy it from and the amount of your coverage limits. That said, the insurance premium that you will pay if you buy UM coverage is usually much less than your premium for the mandatory Bodily Injury Liability coverage that drivers must have.

I need help. I got into hit and run. But my insurance told me collision covers it eventhough i have UM coverage. The. They increased my rate saying they need to compensate about whatever they pay. And it takes 3 years before they take it away my record.
