Almost every customer we speak with thinks that uninsured motorist coverage in the State of Florida covers injuries and covers the damage to the vehicle should they get hit by an uninsured motorist. This is only partially correct. You see, in Florida uninsured motorist coverage generally covers your injuries, lost wages, pain and suffering etc etc if you’re hit by a driver who either doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

But what about your car? Not covered. That’s right, your car is not covered by uninsured motorist coverage. So how do you get your car fixed.

It’s actually collision coverage that covers your car if you’re hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist. And here’s the part that stinks…remember that deductible you picked when you purchased the policy. Which is typically around $500. Your policy will cover the repairs but it will be subject to that deductible. So you’ll be out of pocket that amount if you're hit by an uninsured motorist.

So check your policy, make certain you're comfortable with the deductible…buckle up and stay informed!
