What is a rear-locking differential?

I have a locking differential on my 4x4 Kubota tractor, operated by a foot pedal. Its huge when you bring that other big tire into play, and its gotten me out of jams many times. I made sure my f150 was equipped with this option, if not I moved on only considering those with the pull out 4x4 knob.

Nice had my new f250 single cab for about 7 months noticed yesterday my knob told me to pull so naturally I pulled it and the light came on and I said this as a diff lock? Sure enough read the manual never seen them on pick ups

I'm in the market for a 3/4 or 1 ton. The new ones with 4wd are $50, 000+. Found a new 1 ton 2wd with locker for $43, 000. Would you recommend getting it? Our situation - We get some snow here. I'm not an off-roader. Originally wanted 4wd for questionable campgrounds (have a travel trailer) and dicey boat ramps. Would you get this truck with 2wd and a locking rear diff? Or hold out for one with 4wd?
