What is NR?

Nicotinamide riboside is a form of vitamin B3 that serves as a precursor to NAD+, a vital coenzyme found in every cell of the body. NR is unique among the B3 vitamins because it directly contributes to the NAD+ pool without undergoing significant transformation. This direct conversion makes NR a potent and efficient way to elevate NAD+ levels in the body.

Why is NAD Important?

NAD+ is essential for a myriad of cellular functions, including energy metabolism, DNA repair, and the regulation of circadian rhythms. It acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in redox reactions, which are crucial for converting nutrients into energy. NAD+ also activates sirtuins, proteins that play a role in cellular health and longevity by regulating gene expression and mitochondrial function.

NR's Role on Cardiovascular System

Cardiovascular health is heavily influenced by NAD+ levels. NR supplementation has been shown to support heart function by enhancing energy production and improving mitochondrial health. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, responsible for producing the energy required for heart muscles to function efficiently.

NR's Role on Brain Health

Neurological health is closely tied to NAD+ levels. NAD+ is essential for maintaining the integrity of neurons and supporting cognitive functions. NR supplementation has been shown to enhance brain energy metabolism, protect against neurodegeneration, and promote neuroplasticity, which is crucial for learning and memory.

NR's Role on Boosting Energy Levels

Physical performance and endurance are heavily dependent on cellular energy production. NAD+ plays a pivotal role in converting food into energy, which is critical for athletic performance and recovery. By increasing NAD+ levels, NR supplementation enhances the body’s ability to generate energy, thereby improving stamina and reducing fatigue during physical activities.

NR Dosing

The optimal dosage of NR can vary depending on individual health goals and conditions. However, most studies and clinical trials have used doses ranging from 250 mg to 500 mg per day. This dosage has been shown to be effective in significantly boosting NAD+ levels without adverse effects.

General Safety of NR

NR is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. Clinical trials have reported minimal side effects, with the most common being mild digestive discomfort.

Probably the most thorough breakdown on it’s role on nad and sirtuin activity.

I prefer Elysium NR because their NR is crystalline. Which means it survives gut acid better.

When taking any medication or supplement, the first question is what are the harms? There doesn’t appear to be anything serious, so far, with NR. Second, are there studies showing reduced heart attacks, neurodegenerative conditions, diabetes, etc in adults taking NR? While NAD may be a widespread chemical throughout and levels decrease over time, does supplementing make an important difference in clinically important disease?

I used to take NR for acne several years ago, at the recommendation of my dermatologist. It didn't help. I also have been doing intermittent fasting for about 8 years. Nevertheless I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia at the age of 36 with fatigue as my biggest complaint. Personally, I feel that taking NR should've alleviated the symptoms I was having in the years before I was formally diagnosed with fibro. I'm not willing to try NR again because it let me down. Lab work shows I have high oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. I've also tried D-Ribose, NAC, and CoQ10 on and off, and I'm getting nowhere.

Are you saying NR is superior to NMN for the desired effects, or just more readily available? Does niacin contribute to any of the same benefits?

Niacin and CA-AKG
50 mg of niacin = 1000 mg of NMN
