This is why I absolutely refuse to use a "Free Trial" that demands payment info. I can easily afford it, but I try to deal with as few dishonest companies as I possibly can.

I cancel trials immediately after signing up. You still get the trial period

My logic always was "if it's asking for my credit card information, then it's not free" and closed the website.

I purposefully keep a zero penalty account with close to nothing in it just to put subscriptions in. I get a "Payment declined" notification, then decide if it's important or wanted.

This literally just helped me remember to delete my free trial

Shit almost had to pay my crunchyroll trial. Thanks for the reminder

My friends:

FTC in just these past weeks has passed a regulation that requires companies to gain explicit consent for the first charge of a subscription service at the end of a free trial. Ideally, this means that no forgotten free trial will see you charged.

I believe this was originally done to verify that whomever is signing for the free trial is verifiably a customer and not someone making nonstop throwaway accounts. This later morphed into the forgetmenot free trial charges we have now.

you can cancel trials immediately after you place the order, you dont have to wait till just before renewal

I wish this video would randomly pop up every 1-2 months 😂😂😂

I use 24 hour credit cards for that crap. When they realize they can't charge me automatically, they send an email about it and I cancel

Just canceled a free trial. Thanks for the reminder 👍

It's so they can steal your money but also so you can't keep signing up for new free trials

I have a lock on "recurring payments" in my bank app. Fun fact, it's only a recurring payment charge the first time they try. Two days later they make a regular "e-commerce" charge. So now I have those locked too. If I want to buy something online or start a new subscription or free trial, I just have to push a couple buttons in my bank app, then switch it back after I'm done.

That's literally the only reason they do it. They should be allowed to do it but not be able to call it a "free trial" because that's deceptive. Instead they should say "first month free when you sign up, cancel any time".

Yes it's gummy that they automatically charge you at the end of the free trial but there's also a legitimate reason to take payment information. If they don't customers can just keep making up fake emails and keep abusing free trials

Both things can be true

Counter idea: payment service provider specifically made for this, that you can provide at a free trial that asks you to confirm any invoices before any actual money can be withdrawn, thereby making it impossible to be charged for services you don't want or accept

this did remind me to cancel my free amazon prime trial

I hate how most things you sign up to even if they are free want both a mobile number and email. I refuse to give them a phone number, they don't need it, and I don't want random companies having it so it can be leaked and used by scammers

The first thing I do after signing up for a free trial is turn off auto renew. That in particular is the worst part of this. It should absolutely be illegal to have auto renew turned on by default.

Well, thankfully, one click cancelling is mandated by law in the USA now (cancelling a service must be as easy as signing up for it; like, ig you signed up via online platform, they can't ask you to visit some physical location or send in a physical letzer to cancel etc.).
My MO was any time a "free" trial asks me for my payment info, I cancel the whole thing. If they ask for that, it's not free anymore.
And while some big companies are already getting ready to fight this stellar law, they're actually curting into their own flesh.
I - and probably many people like me - am much more inclined to go for a trial, if I know I only need a few clicks to cancel it.
But, since corporate ladders support opportunism over actual capability, it's no surprise there's a bunch of morons sitting up top, making dumb a$$ decisions.
