Why A Lower Set Point Will Give You Logo Range

In this video I break down the likely second most important basketball shooting technique development of the past decade - the low set point (behind only early release timing). I focus on the reason why a low set point puts your arm and shoulder in optimal positions to transfer power to the ball during the pushing phase of the shot. If you haven't guessed it, I'm a proponent of players, especially smaller (below 6'5'') wings and guards, utilizing the low set point to maximize their basketball shooting range. The basic principles do, however, transfer to larger players too.

Lebron has been hitting deep 3s lately, does that correlate to his hairline?

One thing that should be mentioned is a lot of the small guards with low set points in the nba don't really shoot midrange shots. It is hard to have a midrange game when you shoot one motion with a low set point because things are much more congested within the 3 point line. Steph Curry is a perfect example. When he gets inside 15 feet he will almost always shoot a floater rather than shoot a jumpshot.

I have personally struggled with this because I've always been an excellent shooter (2 motion, eye level set point) and seeing the new wave of nba guards made me want to change my shot to emulate them so that's what I did. It did give me better range and I could hit very deep shots with pretty good consistency but the rest of my game suffered. So eventually I switched back and it honestly feels much better (for me).

All this to say I don't think that shooting one motion with a low set point is universally better for smaller players, I think it really depends on how you play.

Thanks this was the one adjustment I needed because im 5’10 and used to have a high set point like Klay Thompson and ive been air balling and I didn’t know why but till I came across this video I tried lowering my set point like trae young and my shooting % has increased dramatically. I used to what shot mechanics but none of the videos worked. Thanks so much.

You said the hairline right above the head on purpose lmao 😂 I’m weakkkk

He said “Lebrons sey point is around his hairline” so ur saying u want us to shoot from the back of our head?

Thanks for the video, I used to have a high set point and was really good at shooting contested shots and off balances threes, but my realease was slow ( this is why I took these difficult shots so I wouldn’t get blocked, I’m only 5’9). Then I changed my set point to a low set point, my shot is quicker, my ranged increased. So thanks a bunch

This is the second vídeo I watch from your channel and I love how you analyze moves. We've been told our whole lives that our elbow needs to stand square for the shot, and none of these guys do that. Physics is important. Thank you.

It’s so great having you make videos again, and I think it would be really cool if you make a video about shooting arcs if you haven’t already

Jaren Jackson is one of those guys who's a giant but has a low set-point and it looks really awkward. But like you say in the video, most of us are closer to Trae Young's bodytype which I agree with using a lower set point. Just thought it was interesting to point out JJJ's form.

Low set point shooters like Trae and Steph use their whole body’s momentum to shoot the ball long range. It’s not just the upper body mechanics, it’s the whole body that shoots the ball.

I feel like it’s harder to change to a lower set point because my wingspan is too long, that’s why I shoot it above my head

In addition to range, it can be argued that a lower set point also provides better ALIGNMENT due to being able to "see" the entire arm through to the basket - sort of like throwing darts.

Great video! Emphasis a lot of technique which is very important and effective when learned at a young age. I'm a 42 year old recreational baller who has a high set point. But since I'm not gifted with strength to launch from deep, adjusting to a lower set point with a quick release will be very effective once mastered.

You're right, nba players with low set point have no problem getting blocked because they get the shot off really quick, this is also why their shots are so effective from deep, by getting the shot off quick off the pass, you're actually transferring some of the energy/momentum from the pass into the shot, which helps tremendously.

Amazing video.. i'm 6"0 and skinny and had eye level set point this summer, my shot was kinda slow and i could shoot amazing from mid range and i hit fadeaways and contested shots at a high rate... but my 3 point shot was awful.. barely hit them and it made my shot inconsistent.. now my set point is nose or almost mouth level and it feels fluid and consistent.. i shoot 3's with ease because i don't have to use as much power from my legs anymore.. the only downside is that my mid range game is off a little because i used to shoot contested shots but now i have to practice my shot speed rather than my elevation.. some say have 2 set points but i find it inconsistent.. in conclusion this video helped me understand that i shouldn't copy tall athletes' jumpshots because you should have your jumpshot constructed for YOUR BODY TYPE. I shot better this whole month better with a lower set point rather than those three months with a higher set point.. hopefully more people find this channel and subscribe because you break down shooting to a science!❤️✌️
