Let’s talk about why it’s so difficult for some people to lose weight and keep it off.

Dieting is similar to famine. If you have difficulty losing weight because you’ve dieted for many years, your body is likely compensating for survival purposes.

You don’t have a slow metabolism—you have an enhanced metabolic efficiency. Once you understand the right problem, you can attack it with a better solution.

People who restrict calories are more susceptible to nutrient deficiencies, which can affect their hormones. Your body can also adapt to lower amounts of calories, causing it to burn less fat, making it harder to lose weight.

Intermittent fasting differs from calorie restriction for a few reasons. When done correctly, you have less hunger and fewer cravings with intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting also has unique health benefits that you can't get with a calorie-restrictive diet.

It’s important to do the Healthy Keto® diet along with intermittent fasting so you don’t create imbalances in the body.

You also adapt your body to run on ketones when you do intermittent fasting. This is a situation where you’re burning your own fat. Even though you might indirectly reduce your calories by consuming fewer meals, your body still burns fat fuel.

If you do calorie restriction without going low-carb, you could easily find yourself in a situation where you can't tap into your fat. Instead, you may tap into your muscles because your carbs and insulin are too high. If you have high insulin, you can’t burn fat.

I don’t consider the Healthy Keto plan and intermittent fasting a diet because you can easily do this long-term. This is a lifestyle change that doesn’t even feel like a diet.

Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting have incredible benefits to support your health and weight loss. But, if you find it difficult to do the Healthy Keto diet, you may want to try the metabolic confusion diet for a little while until you feel ready to take on the Healthy Keto diet with intermittent fasting.

When I went low carb I actually increased my calories. I spent decades starving myself fat and sick on 1200 low fat, high fibre calories a day. Had an active job and went to the gym. Barely fit a size Canadian 18.
Now I eat when hungry. Close to 2000 plus calories a day. Size 6/8.
Fourteen years now.

I started Intermittent Fasting about three months ago when my doctor told me I was 236 pounds and pre-diabetic. I have very bad legs from Army injuries and wasn’t sure what I could do physically. Then I found Dr. Berg’s videos. Since then, I’ve lost 25 pounds by mixing in Intermittent fasting and switching up my calorie intake after a few days to keep my body on its toes. I’m now at 213 pounds and no longer pre diabetic. It’s been working great! My gf was heavily against it originally but when she saw the results she is now even more into it than I am.

I've been Keto for 6 years. The least intuitive part of this is the body's use of your own fats for daily fuel requirements. You literally carry your caloric stores with you everywhere you go. No more hunger 😊

When I followed the FDA/USDA recommended diet, I went from the upper 270s (still overweight) to over 425lbs. When I found a doctor that told me to go low carb I dropped down to 245. When I went full keto I dropped to about 200lbs but my waist went from 60 to 33 so most of the current weight is muscle

Low self esteem is a huge factor. More often than not, I feel like giving up. The embarrassment of my condition should be the motivating factor to push for a long term diet.

I think the big problem everyone forgets, is ALL sugars and ALL carbohydrates have to be converted to fat before they can be converted to glucose. The body does not burn sugar, it burns glucose. One meal a day gives the body the time to convert sugars to fat that can be converted to glucose. Which improves overall true efficiency of energy. If one is eliminating sugar and carbohydrates and doing one meal a day loaded with essential minerals and vitamins, the body will convert stored fat to glucose and ketones, which is actually the bodies preferred fuel.
It is the sugar and carbohydrate intake that is throwing everyone off. Any sugar/frutose intake should be from actual fruits, not processed fruit extracts. That way one gets the benefits of the fruits nutrition with its sugar, but still just one meal a day, or every other day. But agreed, the total elimination of all sugars and carbohydrates, and doing just one meal a day is best.

I started fasting for 16 hours per day and cut out 98% of my carbs.

I was not really overweight. But, now I’m dropping to my ideal weight.

The thing I was amazed about is that I do not get light headed any more if I miss a meal. I also have more energy and feel great.

I was also surprised that I can play 2-3 hours of pickleball while fasting with no problem.

Thank you.

Thank you doctor berg . I just got the book by Richard Johnson “Nature wants us to be Fat . “ I appreciate the insight and way this author explains the “should be” obvious factors why we are feeling so lousy these days.
Over trendy years ago I got I’m my head the notion of eating foods from your region, and only in season.
Life happened, and I reach for the sugars and salts, and have forgotten the fructose dilemma. Only eat sugars in the fall, and only from real fruits, eat vitamins C through dark leafy greens, and avoiding drinking calories. Derp! I’ve know this my whole life, yet cheap food and sneaky calories have crept into my pallet .
Back to drinking water with meals, and only enjoy wine/milk/ beer/soda in the winter to bulk up, warm up.
In summer, do not eat “winter foods “ ….Wheat, sugars, meats, that food heats me up and makes me feel miserable.
I observed this while living in Phoenix Arizona, I would eat vegetables and the morbidly obese people around me were eating Texas food, and looked miserable, smelled terrible, and complained of the heat and couldn’t want or do much due to arthritic eating. These people would be angry with me, and denigrate me for wanting to eat healthy, so I moved away. Misery loves company and I wasn’t interested in it. These obese people would say they are allergic to veggies?!?!?
What is up with that?

Yes! Every body is different and you have to figure out what works for you and realize that as you age you need to continuely make changes! Listen to your body and it will tell what works and what doesn't. I know a few "skinny" people who are not healthy so I think the myth of being skinny is a misnomer.. continue to educate yourself and watch Dr. Berg videos his information is priceless and could be life saving!

I've been having regular sugar for 3 yrs after learning about keto (not 100% doing it_ & have plenty of video comments on health chans that I CANNOT QUIT SUGAR. I can't. But as of last month, I was able to quit eating a dessert item after dinner. So now I only eat sugar in mornings & won't touch it the rest of the day. THIS IS HUGE IMPROVEMENT. I already feel a little better

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

00:00 🍔 Dieting often leads to weight regain. People who do many diets can experience slower metabolism or enhanced metabolic efficiency.
01:11 ⛽️ Calorie restriction makes the body more efficient in using fuel, similar to a car with better mileage. It's not a slow metabolism; it's enhanced metabolic efficiency.
04:18 📉 Calorie-restricted diets like "The Biggest Loser" can lead to lower metabolism and rapid weight regain. Adaptive thermogenesis occurs, making it harder to lose weight.
06:09 🍽️ Intermittent fasting, if done correctly, can be effective for weight loss without increased hunger or cravings. It can also help the body adapt to burning its own fat for fuel.
12:03 🔀 The metabolic confusion diet alternates between low and high-calorie days. While not well-studied, it may be a flexible option for those who struggle with traditional calorie-restricted diets.

I feel as though we do control our baseline metabolism through our psychology. When we find our lives very interesting, exciting, inspirational, and appreciation of it all, our bodies open up the energy gates to live and do life vigorously. When we feel overwhelmed and like life is not enjoyable because the demand is excessive and convert it to stress, is when our bodies switch to survival, caloric efficiency mode. Switching from an entirely positive outlook to a less positive outlook is the beginning of the depression spiral.
