Just ask any archeologists what they found in tablets talk about military victories in the Canaaan. The king of Moab, the enemy of Israel did claim that the had wiped out the Israel. They were gone, it’s all done with them forever, etc. But we know that after Israelites were “massacred” they defeated all of their enemies and say the same about their victories over their enemies. Now, if the Israelites had wiped out of their enemies, how could they enslaved them afterward? How came God forbidden them to intermarried with these people, which the Israelites did intermarried with them whom had been destroyed and there was nothing remained? Studies support this idea as the Jews, the Arabs especially in the Levant, and even some Europeans whose civilization have been bless by God have ancient Canaanites DNA, means that the Book of Joshua didn’t meant it literally: also if they were all wiped out from the face of the earth, why God had to choose a left-handed man named Ehud to free Israel from the Moabites centuries later? And guess what? One of the ancestor of Jesus was Ruth the MOABITE. So the Bible in Itself is the proof, along with archeological and DNA researches. So, clearly God used the cultural classical exaggerating war language to teach us that we need to obey the new Joshua (Yeshua) and be “genocidal” to mercilessly conquer the kingdoms of sins, to struck sins by the edge of the spiritual sword: truly, kill all of the deadly, mortal sins, and the little venial sins: spare not the temptations nor all of the near occasions of sins, slay them and wiped all of them out of the face of our lives: behold, the Lord Jesus Christ our God had defeated the power of the Devil and his dominion, and of sin, and death, and had open the door to salvation for us: He had laid their kingdoms in our hands: therefore, you shall not fear nor shall you dread. Let the kingdoms of sins be laid waste, and destroyed, and be burned down all that are sinful and evil, and become a tomb and be seen no more, forever and ever, and the Lord our God will lead us to the Promise Land of the Kingdom of Heaven. ALLELUIA!
See, I’ve just used that language, and in the case of destroy sins, it LITERALLY make sense now. Bingo! Medieval Western Catholics believed that the Book of Joshua was written in that way to teach us how to fight sins in the spiritual warfare. So, think about it: God used ancient Near East symbolically culturally classically exaggerating war language of the time to teach us how to deal with sins. Glory be to God. God bless.

It’s because both are written by man, it’s filled with a ton of inconsistencies and biases. God loves us all and we’re all flawed the way he created us. Peace to all 🙏🏼✌🏼

Old Covenant/New Covenant distinctions and legal structures of Israel come into play as well.

The wage on sin is death. It was only after Jesus came that we were spared this punishment.

The Law kills, plain and simple. But Jesus gives life..

Capital punishment and an eye for an eye were not a thing until after Noah's flood.

The logic behind the evolution of God's relationship with His chosen children is reasonably clear. We humans were selfish, undisciplined savages and God selected a group of us with potential to receive his favor.

Like children generally, we needed to be disciplined to gain and keep God's favor. For many generations we walked a wobbly path in that regard--straying often and disobeying God's commands.

As we grew and advanced the relationship between God and us became more nuanced. Eventually, a sufficient number of His children were sufficiently obedient that He bestowed upon us Himself in human form.

Jesus brought an age of grace....unmerited favor.

A better analogy would be to simply look at the proverbial dad (the security guard) and look at how he treats his kids at age 5, versus how he treats his kids at age 25. There’s a huge difference as the children grow up, just like there would be between an OT God and a NT God, who is working with a more established, grown set of people.

The distinction I recognize is that the point of the Old Testament is to point out, first, that a "Chosen People" can squander their favor with God: and second, that the Jews "misheard" God because of their attachment to fleshly, earthly matters over God. Throughout Jesus' debates with the Jewish religious leaders, Jesus constantly points out the incorrectness of what Jews claimed they "heard" from God. For instance, Jesus points out that the Jews are wrong about dietary restrictions, wrong about what was allowed on Sabbath, wrong about punishment of infidelity, wrong about the realm of God's kingdom, wrong about Jewish appointment over all others, etc. It's a mistake to try to reconcile the Old and New Testaments as is done in the video. Christians should interpret the Old Testament IN LIGHT OF Jesus' ministry.

God dealt in different ways with people through the ages.. of which there are at least seven ages or dispensations. We are currently in the dispensation of grace and not the law

God also communicated spiritual truths to the Israelites through physical realities and concepts. For example, while there were several sins that required capital punishment in the Old Testament, many of these same sins are considered mortal sins today because committing them is to undergo a spiritual death, a separation from God.

Wrong! First off the scripture you quoted was added and is not in the older manuscripts.

Or… maybe many of the stories in the Old Testament shouldn’t be considered literally true, but rather as reflections of the understanding of God that the authors had at their time. These stories were influenced by the authors' cultural backgrounds, as well as their religious and moral beliefs, with actions attributed to God accordingly.

God is not a human. So your argument is flawed to assuming god is human. You cant be omnipotent and also be human in your thoughts and ideas

My question about this is, how has the situation changed? Did he not love people before Jesus? Did people's behavior change on a dime when this thing that they didn't even know happen did?

The God of the OT is not as bad as people make him out to be. People just selectively quote certain texts, while simultanteously ignoring all the good in the OT. For example, in the book of exodus, God literally frees the israelites from slavery, gives pharoah 10+ chances to repent (with miraculous signs), gives treasures and riches to the israelites, feeds them with manna, water, and quails despite their complaints and blatant lies, sends them a fire by night to keep them warm and a cloud by day to reduce the heat. He also shows them pity, after they go worship a golden cow. God gives them laws and stability. He establishes the sabbath day, so they can break from the spirit of slavery and learn to be people and rest.
