The problem is that in my social circle no one will wait for the pauze to be over. Instead everyone will start talking at the slightest hint of silence.

Don't Umm, just coldly stare into the person's eye while you gather up your words.

The 'uhm' part is being contested for a while now.

It appears it says more about the listener. There are listeners who see the 'uhm' as a sign the person is truelly thinking and not reading a script, which feels unnaturally smooth. However the amount of 'uhm' is a thing though. You do not want to use it twice in each sentence.

And the pauses are also contested. They say a pause can sometimes be misinterpreted by listeners as an opportunity to talk themselves, or create moments where people lose focus on what you say.

The 'uhms' are a natural thing. We should stop seeing ourselves as machines. It's perfectly okay, and you should be perfectly okay with that too, just because the confidence in finding that okay, will also show when you talk.

Some things are very outdated. We rather should learn how to respectfully listen, instead how to talk. We have plenty of talkers, not so much listeners.

It’s funny that when he talks about speech he used a music analogy. In jazz music we use speaking and conversation as an analogy.

Pauses are better than filler words but if you take one that’s too long and you’re in the middle of a conversation then it could prompt another individual to think you’re done talking and interrupt you. That is when the filler becomes necessary.

We had a funny thing here in Sweden. A local politician got a raise higher than a cleaners monthly pay. And when asked in an interview "Were there no other places to put the money instead?" he literaly did a 27 seconds pause and said, "It's a question of priorities". It was just incredably hilarious with the silence

This guy comes off as real, most public speakers who give advice have this phony feeling about them. This guy is definitely the real deal!

The main reason you pause is to keep people's attention. If you just talk in one running sentence, people stop listening after like 30 words. Pausing does 2 things; it allows people to process the words you've just said, and it refocuses people on what you're saying because the silence causes those people who've stopped paying attention to be attentive again as the break in noise level snaps them back to reality

I think it's very important to differentiate between situations here. If you're giving a keynote speech like this guy, yes you should do silent pauses because people are already listening, and expecting you to continue.
If you're in a more informal conversation though, uhm and ahs make sense, to let the other participants know that you're currently processing your next line of dialogue, or thinking about a response to what they just told you

Umms are a good way to bridge the gap between two thoughts without sounding you are done talking so you dont get interrupted or cut off

Speech (public speaking) was a required course at my high school. This was the best lesson I learned in that class.

“Umm” is useful when you’re talking to someone who keeps interrupting or monopolizing the conversation every time there is a pause for them to jump in. It’s a habit we usually learn as kids who tend to talk over each other.

Great advice for having a speech, not so much for being in a conversation. People will assume that you're finished speaking and will then respond thinking that you're done. That's what the noise is for.

Yeah, tried that. People want to talk about their own experiences so much that those pauses become open invitations to be interrupted.
