3 SECRET Reasons to Pause When You Speak

When I was starting out my career as an entrepreneur and keynote speaker, I used to get so nervous talking in front of people that I wouldn't even pause between my words. I would just speak faster and faster and faster.

If you don't pause between your words, how do you expect the audience to take anything away from what you say? By not pausing, you lose clarity, and therefore the audience won't learn much.

Pausing not only allows others time to process what you just said, it also gives you time to think about what to say next. AND it removes the umms & ahhs from your speech. So it's a win-win!

I'm mainly afraid of pausing due to the culture here. If someone isn't speaking for a few seconds, they immediately get talked over by someone else. However better your presentation skills may be due to doing this, I can't find any way to make this work in a more intimate or debate setting.

I have tried pausing, slowing or pacing down, and repeating an important word or phrase aka highlighting or paraphrasing. They all work wonders.

As a writer, you have to use punctuation to add these very necessary pauses in order to have a message ring out in clarity, so this very much hits home for me.

He's right i had a boss that would constantly pause to the extent sometimes it would get uncomfortable, until he spoke and almost everything he said was thought out to a point I've never met someone again that really contemplated almost everything he said. But when he spoke the room paid attention because you knew you needed to hear what he had to say.

i grew up in a family with 4 other siblings. it was 7 people at the dinner table, so if you paused, you had finished talking and other people could start talking. we got used to using filler words like instead of a pause because it had the same effects, but let people know that we weren't done with what we were saying. with people moving out we have all started using pauses more (though we go right back for a short while whenever there is a family dinner :)
