I love seeing Jason and Thomas together. Different perspectives, career paths, etc... but combined they're a savvy couple of experienced devs. Make a game together? Thank you both for what you do everyday for game dev ❤

Can't wait to finish the FTGD course, you were so right on your video where you talked about how it's harder as you get older to do this. Not impossible. These videos do keep me motivated though. Thank you.

What about people who don't live in the US? It is hella harder to make connections for both situations:)

That's kind of sad. I live in Asia, in very poor country. We don't have successful game development studios as well as events. And I can't afford to fly to other country.
But anyways, I won't give up and do whatever I need to make games.

It's funny Thomas, I actually JUST posted a video on this same topic (with the same title too, coincidence much?) a few weeks ago. I really like this different take on the subject, and it was awesome to see you and Jason together. Connections have definitely made a difference for me; I can't help but agree.

Well, guess the AAA dev life ain't for me and the indie dev journey is gonna be a LOT tougher. Since it's virtually impossible to attend meetups from Nigeria related to games.
But I'm gonna go the publisher route for sure....
And personally, I'm gonna polish my portfolio and current demo as much as I can, then approach You, for some advice. :-)

No offense to Jason the qa path to dev is near impossible as contractors are the norm for most aaa and if not the studio will require mutiple years of experience to get in.For example general qa for bungie in Seattle require 2 years of experience.

9:30 That (also) is some really good talk. I live in the middle of forest in Finland. The nearest groceryshop is 17 km (10ish miles?) away but the internet works so I don´t see why I couldn´t do indie stuff back from here :)

It's been like 5 years now, but I went to a small game studio one time, more than indie but less than AAA i'd say? Nice folks. I had an information-gathering interview with them, and I asked about the whole QA to Developer path since I'd heard about it so much. What they told me though was that wasn't as much of a thing anymore, because there are people who are professional QA testers, who want to be QA testers and the job has a different skill set. They said that if someone wants to be a QA tester, they should apply as a QA tester, and if they want to be a coder or designer, they should apply for that, because they have different requirements and expectations.

I expect it's different at each studio but it sounded like the QA testers aren't the stepping-stone job anymore, and are being taken more seriously maybe? It is a pretty important job after all.

Hey Thomas been working on my game the last 2 years, its a 4x strategy game where you colonize the stars within 40 light years of our solar system. I've done all the art, sound effects and even music but I just can't figure out how to code im just too stupid when it comes to math. I was thinking of hiring a coder what are your thoughts?

hey thomas. I have a question about your gamedev course.
To be honest I'm using unreal and I'm a pretty decent coder already so the "dev" isn't what interest me. But the "build your studio, kickstarter, your steam page, audience etc. looks really great !
My question is : Being french, under a different set of law and administration rules, would I be able to build a studio with your course or does it have strictly a US-based application ?

The QA latter thing doesn't work anymore, like in the 90s and 00s.

I just moved to Seattle from Kentucky to try and find an opportunity. It's tough, it's hard to know what to put in my portfolio sometimes.

Edit: you ended up touching on it some. If either one of you want to, and have some time and wanted to look at mine, I would appreciate it.

While it's a valuable advice, I wish someone would talk about side-stepping the "social element" requirements like connections, marketing, following, etc. Not everyone is suit for such fields, and "building connections is essential" isn't quite helpful in those cases.
Come to think of it, people go to game dev instead of software dev because of their passion for the craft, and the desire to building connections isn't necessarily guaranteed to come with the desire to make games, and having to do it forcefully kinda defeats the point of pursuing passion.
