I love how that running gag from the Greek games is now played for drama here as one of Kratos' greatest shames.

I remember pushing that boat Captain back into Tartarus after he had almost managed to climb out.. and laughing afterwards.

Boat Captain: Please save me!
Kratos: 🗿

You could hear Kratos choke up at the end there for even a moment. Something that was seen as a gag in the original games turned into a truly horrifying trauma for him to admit his guilt. He saw himself as a monster, and the boat captain's murder was a manifestation of it.

“The hydra was just an animal, I showed him what a true monster looks like.”
If that sentence alone doesn’t encapsulate who and what younger Kratos was idk what else can…

To be so casually cruel, I…

Damn, we almost never see kratos either stutter or cut off, that’s how you can tell just how big his remorse is for this man

I pity the Boat Captain despite his death is hilarious. Like everywhere he goes and everytime he almost succeeded. Then there's Kratos fucking up his life at the worst moment.

The worst part? As the person who was in control of Kratos while the boat captain suffered again and again, I never felt bad about it until I heard this. His old callous, unrepentant rage was mine. His new introspection and shame is now mine and overshadows the old. A masterful game.

The boat captain was like the Cabbage man in ATLA. Except more gruesome and violent

The writing in this game is next level. I could listen to these side conversations for hours

Mimir: That's horrible, brother. However, it's worth noting you're no longer that-

Kratos: He managed to survive, but then we unfortunately crossed paths a second time.

Mimir: And then you killed him?

Kratos: No, he somehow survived that encounter too.

Mimir: Oh, then what's the proble-

Kratos: I saw him a third time.

Mimir: I may be a Jötun but Jesus Christ, Brother

I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen Kratos use a contraction.
