I went here in November. I went with friends who live in Indonesia and we decided to get the sunset ticket. Rain had been forecast and by pure luck and coincidence we ended up being the only ones up there for sunset! The whole temple for 4 people. It was truly incredible.

First time I visited Borobudur, I also didn't really that impressed, even though I am a Buddhist, I just think Ok it's huge temple but nothing really special, just take some picture here and there, but then I come visit again, in my 2nd visit I come with group of my university for study tour, we got accompany by a Buddhist monk, He explained all filoshopy behind the temple, the history, every story behind the relics from 1st floor until the top, and it was really amazing experience, so maybe next time if you can back to Borobudur again, you can asked a guide to explained to you the history behind it

to be honest, your reason for not liking it is not fair. In this age of selfie, wherever tourist site you come, people are eagerly taking picture for boasting in social media rather than enjoying the moment. It is not the fault of the place or the management. Second, famous tourist place is always full of people. The trick is don't come in weekend or holiday season. When I went there last year I only met around seven other tourists and the ticket is cheaper too because I came during usual work days.

dude, if you only go to the places for pretension and care less about energy and history, then do yourself a favor and learn how to use photoshop and stay at your place, and edit pictures with your face on each of them. Great video, but negativity of your comments is bad, sorry man, im being honest.

Why is this guy so concerned about what everyone else is doing? If he had been focused on his own reactions, maybe he might have obtained more value out of his visit.

Hehe Jacob.. you went there, didnt sleep, drove 1 1/2 hour, you had the best possible experience of it during sunrise and still you were not letting go of the negativity you had originally about it. You blocked most of what you could get from it.
Yes its very touristic, yes its too expensive, yes its crowded and maybe as you say most people that visit it do it for the photos, but what you did was almost the same thing from another perspective . You cared more for all the above, than really get the energy of the place.
This was an interesting "Jacob reaction" to watch. :)
P.S You know this is not a hate or judgemental comment . but since written things can be misunderstood, i need to clarify it.
Besides, you know i love you.

6:02 jumping like that can cause damage on the site (especially those stones are getting fragile over decades). Be considerate while travelling is essential!

I am sorry to see that you are disapointed after visiting the Borobudur. I was there in Spring of 2017. We stayed in the hotel close to the temple. Within 5 minuts I was at the entrance. We visited the temple serveral times. And yes there are many people and yes it is very crowded. But if you looking very closely there is so much more te see. We had a very good guide with us to explain all of the things you can see on this temple. And if you not an expert it is diffecult to see all these beautifull things. Most people run op to the top and only take pictures. I am afraid you mist the important message of this temple. The life and lessons of the Buddha. Perhaps you shoud go there again with an experienced guide!!

What will help you enjoy Borobodur more:
- Read up a bit beforehand, this will increase what you will get out of it (if you get the feeling it's not for you, don't go just to get it off your bucket list).
- Hire a guide to give you explanations.
- Stay in the town itself, so you don't have to make the longer trip from Yogya (I took the public bus the day before).
- Of course, having an interest in Buddhism helps being open to how special Borobodur is. In the end, places like these are like the warm rays of the sun: It won't be upset at you for shunning it, its rays will be there day after day for those to be enjoyed who are open to the experience.

Complain, complain, complain. Why don't you just stay at the hotel and enjoy the pool? And have your margaritas

What you should have mentioned is that there are countless number of other temples in the area that you can visit that are extremely interesting and provide a lot more solitude

You don't like it maybe because you kind of andventury type. I love visiting borobudur because the story and history in it. Looking at the relief around the Borobudur and translate it's story is my adventure

Never talk to a camera when you're on a trip. Just enjoy the experience and learn something. That's how you get the best out of it. :)

Alot of people mistaken about Borobudur location, it is actually in a city called Magelang, on central java province, it is different from Yogyakarta..but some of yogyakarta's travel agents always include this temple as one of their destination..

This was probably the most beautiful temple I've been to. We still managed to get the historical essence because my Indonesian friends were historical people. I still think its worth it! Never let people influence your experience about places. Its all about you and how you create that experience. For me, it was definitely worth it!

I loved it so much i went two times and love it. Also got up at 3am. Really it was 5 years ago i remember it in detail. But i did find ways to get away from the tourists. It takes time to do so for sure.
