🔴 Did you know that osmosis plays a vital role in the behavior of our very own red blood cells? 🩸✨ Let's dive deeper into this fascinating process together! 🌊
🔍 Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration. In the case of red blood cells, this membrane is the cell membrane itself. 💦
🔬 When red blood cells are placed in a hypotonic solution (lower solute concentration than the cell), water molecules flow into the cells through osmosis. The cells absorb water and swell up, potentially leading to a burst! 💥
🔬 Conversely, when red blood cells are exposed to a hypertonic solution (higher solute concentration than the cell), water molecules move out of the cells through osmosis. This causes the cells to shrink or even shrivel up. 🙇‍♂️
