Urinating blood, known as hematuria, can be really scary. In this video, I go over some of the most common reasons for why there is blood in your urine.

I'll also talk about what the workup or tests that we do to make sure you don't have cancer.

This video is too scary. Kidney stones should be first on the list for men with gross hematuria and second for women. I'm 51 and had gross hematuria lasting 14 hours (brown-reddish urine, started after a 10 minutes jog). A few days later my GP who assured me that chances I had cancer as a never smoker are less than 5%, sent me for a low radiation CT scan, which has revealed a 3mm by 6mm uretal stone. I had it removed by URS, and went on with my life (with a low oxalate diet). I never had to do any further testing except for an ultrasound every 6 months to make sure no new stones are forming... If you're a never smoker and younger than 60, cancer should be the last thing on your mind if you have hematuria...

One day I started urinating blood. Next day, was in hospital with severe pain on my right side below the rib. CT-scan showed a 3 inch stone in urea tube. Stone usually has tiny spikes and was scraping on the urea wall lining causing bleeding which flow down to the bladder and excreted during pissing. Good news is it was just a small stone and not cancer. Bad news is this thing sitting in the urea can cause severe stomach pain. Its extremely painful. Doctor said eventually the stone will move down into the bladder and I will have to pissed it out. In the mean time, I'm on oxicotin, advil, flomax, and tylenol to control the pain. I hope this help someone.

Gross hematuria is so freaky. It's shocking. I had a culture and it came back with enteracoccus This time. Sensitive to ampicillin. About 6 months ago I had klebsiella and had to go to the hospital for IVs because I was resistant to all oral antibiotics for it. I'm 71 and I'm freaking out. This time I had pink urine for about a week and finally went in when I got there it was 150 cells of red blood. I've been on amoxicillin for one day and I'm still having slight bleeding and a low temp of 99. I'm really scared that I have cancer how can those bacterias get into my urethra when they're supposedly from the bowels. I try to be very careful and clean. Hi, I’m a new fan of your videos while researching kidney stone remedies. I recently had my first and hopefully last kidney stone a few weeks ago. I had visible blood in urine and fortunately passed it on my own without too much pain in a week and a half. I had a CT scan in an er which picked up the kidney stone but everything else was normal. My new urologist wants me to do a cystoscopy since I put in my patient history form that my uncle had bladder cancer a few months ago even though the visible blood in my urine was due to a kidney stone. I’m in my 30s with no major health issues and no risk factors for bladder cancer. I even did a urinalysis which showed no hematuria or hemoglobin in urine a few days after the stone passed. This procedure seems very invasive and freaks me out. Does this procedure seem unnecessary?

You missed overstretched bladder causing urinary tract infections (holding urine too long, not fully evacuating) and bathroom habits (sitting and relaxing)

Every so often--maybe once a week or less often--my first pee in the morning is dark orange. This started 2 years ago. I went through those tests and doctor found no cause. Very concerning. I will probably wait a few months then go back to see another urologist at the same office.

Hi Dr, thanks for the informative video, I have gross hematuria average 6-10, I have noticed from the last 4 years, I have done cytology, CT scan, MRI, CT scan urogram, ultrasound many times, but couldn’t find anything, I feel pain in my left abdomen which comes and go away time to time.

Thank you doctor for explaining. My urine has been light brown colour for about a week, This happened after I took Cocola once, and thereafter my urine has become light brown, earlier it was pure white. I also take some medicines for Angina. and diabetese. I am going to test my urine today.

Thanks for the valuable information. I have blood in the urine with a large prostate. I went the the urologist gave a sample of urine to be tested. I was told to come back in two weeks to find the results. I hope its only an infection.

My friend was inserted with indwelling catheter 6 days ago and the color of urine coming out is blood stained. What does this indicate. Was the kidney, ureter or bladder been traumatized? Does he needs to see the doctor immediately? He stays at home?
