What causes a toddler to pass blood in stools? - Dr. Varsha Saxena

Blood in the stools of the child can be worrisome for the child. The most common causes for blood in the stools of the child could be fissures. The anal fissures could develop in children who are having chronic constipation and they get cut in the anus which bleeds when they pass stools. Another common cause can be diarrhea. In such conditions, the stool will be watery frequency and be mixed with blood. It indicates that the child will be having some bacterial infection due to some salmonella or shigella infection and the child may require antibiotics. Cow milk allergy can also cause blood in the stools of the child. Certain children with bleeding disorders like hemophilia, ITP can cause bloody stools in the child. Acquired infections like dengue during hemorrhagic phase can cause blood in the stools of the child. Sometimes even the food products, or the medicines can cause red spots which look like blood. Certain foods like tomato, beetroot or watermelon can mimic Blood in the stools. So Blood in the stools of the child if it is present, then the stool should be examined and a pediatrician should be consulted.
