Mild dyslexia

When mild dyslexia goes unidentified it can cause frustration and affect an individual's self-esteem.

Children and adults with mild dyslexia tend to have a harder time manipulating the sounds in words, including rhyming words. Spelling ability might be below average and reading will often take them more time.

In this video, Liz Loly, an experienced teacher, parent, and dyslexia advocate, explains more about mild dyslexia and some of the strategies that may help an adult or child with mild dyslexia.

7 strategies and accommodations to consider:
1. Ensure access to a computer, laptop or tablet at home, in school and in the workplace
2. Go back to basics with English phonics
3. Learn key sight words
4. Use top-down strategies when reading to make inferences and predictions
5. Make use of mnemonic devices to help with spelling
6. Learn how to touch-type
7. Employ a multi-sensory approach to learning

“Let’s help adults and children with mild dyslexia to reach their full potential.” - Liz Loly

This is great... I would like to add one thing to the list that could help. Build a vocab list of key words all around what that child/adult is interested in and what is directly relevant to their world and work. There is a tendency with early spelling to get hung up on 'simple' words but for instance, when I was growing up I was super into dinosaurs; I wish that I had just memorised how to spell pterodactyl, which made as much sense to me back then as learning how to spell 'because'. It would do so much for confidence if at that age you knew that you had one super difficult word down that your peers who were traditionaly 'good' spellers would struggle with! Also, it is an opportunity to look at how bizzare the english language is.

149 views in 3 weeks, yet "up to 20% of the population has some for of dyslexia" (source from various other videos).
These videos are not something I search for daily and they are not produced in mass quantity, but these videos should be spread on social media so that people with dyslexia are able to understand what they have and that they are not the only ones. I was diagnosed with mild dyslexia and ADHD during my elementary school years. I thought I was the only one. I truly hated to read in class, so later I became smarter and would figure out when I would be called on to read, thus I'd pre-read my part...but still felt so much anxiety up until I read the last word...then it would take a minute and I would calm back down (the teacher could have still asked a question about what I read or ask me to read more)....though pre-reading didn't always work. Sometimes the teacher didn't go in order or I miscalculated and pre-read the wrong part.
As an adult, I read 100 to 120wpm...but struggle with ADHD (less hyperactivity than when I was young, but it's still there), but I al already having a hard time helping my 2nd grade son with his school work. I've already explained Dyslexia and ADHD to him and told him that he will soon totally surpass me. I will continue showing him these videos so he can have empathy for others that are struggling in school. He shows no signs of these difficulties, but he should not pressure others that do.
I am only able to come out online about my dyslexia and ADHD because I had to tell my work about it (when I was brought out and spoken about my inability to stay on task...so I told them I have both). I have never told anyone of these difficulties before. I hope to soon speak about it freely, but am not there yet...though I have told a few co-workers. I assumed word has spread around work, but apparently it hadn't. But it felt better just getting it out there.

Being mildly dyslexic is like being mildly pregnant. I am 63 and dyslexic way before there was special ed. I will never be cured but I have learned to live with it. I am a special ed teacher
