The USS Bennington, one of the mightiest vessels in history was taken over by Pirates.

On 7 May 1957, while docked in Sydney for Coral Sea Day celebrations, ten University of Sydney students dressed as pirates boarded the aircraft carrier in the early morning hours undetected. While some began soliciting donations from the Navy crew for a local charity, others entered the bridge. The public address system was turned on. "Now hear this!" announced Paul Lennon, a medical student. "The USS Bennington has been captured by Sydney University pirates!" Alarms for general quarters, atomic and chemical attacks were sounded, rousing the crew from their bunks. Marines escorted the students off the ship. No charges were filed.

This happened back in the 1950s despite this video showing everything being on a modern Carrier. Wouldn't get away with it these days.

It doesn’t matter how drunk u are, if a sailor hears that klaxon he is automatically sobered and at his post fully geared in a matter of minutes!
I used to have a bunk where I could make it to my muster geared and ready in about 40 seconds after being woke up.

USS Bennington (CV/CVA/CVS-20) was an Essex-class aircraft carrier in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and from 1952 to 1970. She was sold for scrap in 1994.

My father was the NATO librarian on the USS Bennington.. he created the cross reference filing system that all branches of the military uses today. He basically had to because the 3 previous librarians were in Leavenworth because things were missing but really miss filed. Because the filing system was so hacked. So my father took it on himself to create the new filing system. I have quite a few stories about that ship. R I P.. Dad
