Personally I’ve never agreed with this catch and release of pirates as they have very little respect for human life and international law. To me any acts of piracy should always be treated with lethal force.

Quite the contrary sir. I have owned and used firearms for over 60 years and ran a small gunsmithing business back in the '70's where I produced custom rifles of all kinds. Plus I have long been a life long long range shooter engaging in bench rest shooting as well. So I do appreciate the difficulty of shooting on the high seas with rolling boats. However, when the pirates come up close to the boat and there is less than 100 yards distance, a shot through the outboard is not a difficult shot with the right gun and even more important the right shooter.

Their rules of engagement should change. Pirates and their boats should be sent to the bottom of the sea !

I worked in Royal Navy anti piracy ops. We used to advise merchant shipping to do things like put barbed wire out and have high pressure fire hoses ready to flood their boats. The ships at risk were slower and with a low freeboard. We used to publicise times when a warship would be transiting the area and an informal convoy of merchant shipping would tag along nearby.

Instead of worrying about the tax burden of capture, processing, persecuting, then jailing or deporting them why not just sink their boat n let nature take its course?

The main reason why the pirates were such a problem for so long is that they soon leaned that if they were caught, they would probably be released! When captured, if they had been lined up against the railing and shot in the stomach, then kicked overboard to be eaten by the sharks, the pirate problem would have been over much sooner!

The solution isn’t to capture them. Piracy should be a death sentence. Sink the ship or boat with prejudice.

You didn’t mention that many ships hired armed guards that fought off pirate attacks. Shooting back was more effective than catch and release. It was also far less expensive then sending warships to police thousands of square miles of ocean.

Read about one case where a yachtsman, attacked by pirates when he had no firearms, turned the one thing he had - his sailboat - into a weapon. As they slowed down to come alongside, he turned the sailboat into them, ramming and sinking them.

I prefer the Russian method. A radar targeted chain gun makes Swiss cheese out of pirates and their boats. Strong deterrent against future piracy.

There seems to be a universal policy of life-sparing capture rather than expedient disposal of aggressive criminals. One burst from a .50 machine gun would put an end to the problem and significantly discourage others from playing pirate. But civilized conduct has overcome common sense when dealing with barbaric criminals.

since as a pirate is considered hostes humani generis (enemy of the human race), a merchant ship could kill pirates with impunity and probably pass any legal challenges in their next port of call.

I can’t understand why we go after pirates and do nothing to the people going into stores loading trash bags with merchandise then walking out.

Piracy would stop overnight if they were just hanged immediately after their capture, like how they were hundreds of years ago. No need for a trial.
