Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question:

Q: Can you do a quick video lesson about the Ionian Mode. I think it is associated to the Major Scale. But, my guitar teacher couldnt explain it very well. I always appreciate your clear explanations, could you please help me out!
- Thanks, Lamar Jacksonville, FL.

The mode known as IONIAN is simply an ancient Greek name for our most basic of scales the "Major Scale." The major scale is the most important scale in music. All other scales are either taken from it or compared to it. The video lesson explains the; structure of the Major scale, it's formula, intervals, basic harmonic design and also included are a few simple practice tips.

The complete lesson article for this video, is available on the Creative Guitar Studio website. Follow the link below to read the full article and get the jam track used in the solo example at the start of the video lesson:

Moving, "A, " to, "B, " is a Major 2nd. If you wanted a Minor 3rd from the tone of, "A, " you would need to go up to a, "C, " note. Study intervals and you'll get it. - Andrew

Thanks Andrew. Its really nice to have someone teaching who knows all the ins and outs. Most youtube teachers are decent players, but are lacking in knowledge.

I started understanding everything and then you started talking about intervals. Now I don't know anything.

Andrew, You are such a Great teacher bro. Thank you for what you do. You are the first person to successfully begin to remove the clouds of mystical thinking from all my bad learning, sooo many thanks!!

Thank you very much for finding a way to explain it so simply. I've been bashing my head at this for a bit, and finally you brought it together for me. Kudos sir!

If this video seems confusing, yes, It goes fast, and there's a lot of information here about the major scale and how chords are made, and the chords of a scale. There's some abstract thinking going on here so pay attention everyone! I couldn't have explained it better, but sometimes I try. It can take a long time for a student to absorb all of what you presented here, but you did it all very well. Thanks!

A very thorough explanation of the major scale and its intervals.

I'm surprised by the comment at 8:37 - in fact plenty of other scale types have a whole step between the fourth and fifth tones. For example, natural, harmonic and melodic minor all do.

Thanks! Showing how the chords are formed from the scales is great!

Thanks for this, the stacking of thirds spelling out chords will be so helpful. Thanks again!

I don't mind memorizing interval, but when I have to move to different string, how did I know which the right fret to start counting interval again?

Do I need to memorize fretboard or is there any standard pattern for that?

Why would there need to be a discussion of no D# in the key of A since there is no D# in the key of A? Does it have to do with the "tone and semi tone" explanation you offered earlier?

Thanks for the help mate but you've just explained the bit I already understand! I'm stuck on the Ionian transistion

i love the intro improve, but i noticed you don't stay in the same area as where the Ionian mode is played, is it just an octave higher or what?

hi. just wanna ask. i heard that each mode has a distinct sound (this mode sounds happy and this mode sounds sad) or something like that, so my question is what does each mode sound like?
