What's with the propane tank? Avoid sewer bugs & smell!

When we are on full hookups at a campground, to avoid smell coming from the sewer and invading bugs into the camper, we put a water trap in the sewer hose.

If we keep the grey water open - and keep black tank closed- we put in a water trap. Then we close the grey valve the day before to accumulate some water. Then the day we leave, we use the grey water to flush after dumping the black.

We have many more RV tips and tricks having to do with full hookups at a park coming in the future.

We mention IF you leave your grey open - as many do. We normally do not.
This is about the trap and is meant for different sewer hookups - can’t show all varieties. This is a SHORT

As an RV technician, I do not recommend leaving any dump valve open. You need that head pressure to help flush out the solids in the tanks.

Well all your plumbing already has p traps to stop the smell. If they aren't stopping it then you've got other issues that need addressed

Yup, I leave them closed. I’m never that lazy to pull a lever once a day to empty the grey tank. Those sewer hoses are not as strong as people think. When they have liquid weight in them like in this video, you will find that hard rocky or asphalt surfaces will grind into the plastic hose and puncture it.

Those sewer flies are awesome though, as they are harmless, dirt doesn't stick to them, and their larvae eat dirt that would clog your sewer lines.

If your grey water tank is empty, how do you clean out your black water tank?

You are supposed to dump the black water tank then let the grey water into the black water tank and dump the black water tank again. After that, you finish dumping the grey water.

Ok the hookup already has a water trap cause the connection is off the ground

I’ve heard that some weren’t built correctly; lack sink traps. It would be a better idea to correct your plumbing, install traps and be done with the problem once and for all, instead of having to develop a “hack.”

That seems like a lot of extra work I just leave it closed, if it for some reason gets full before I'm ready to leave I drain a little Bit

Notice how the p trap curve is downwards?… that’s where the water sits. You’re pretty much just creating a guaranteed air pocket where you put that propane tank. You would need two things under it to create a LOW spot in the hose for this to actually work. Great idea, just poor implementation lol

A block of wood would be a good idea. 4x4. Something that won't move or roll away. Especially that's flammable and under pressure 😂

It's better to just keep your grey tank closed and also put a p trap in the septic hose

That sewer hose will not trap anything. The hose has to be completely full in order to trap air. There is never that much water in a sewer hose line and the sink’s already have traps.

I thought I invented this procedure. I guess it's just great minds...

That's the wrong way for a trap to trap

Everything on your RV minus the toilet already has p- traps and vent stacks so I do not see this helping
