I have used both and I like hawley wire better. I get jaw joint pain and also clicking noise when I open and close my jaw. I would also get migraine. I switched and no longer have those issues.

I have an Hawley retainer, I'm currently wearing one right now infact. To be honest I prefer clear ones so I might ask orthodontist..
