Thanks Dr Sarah for that very useful video, actualy my daughter had a retainer which affected her speech, the Orthodontists never told her about that, and she never wanted to wear them. She ended up with many problems with her teeth. I am glad you have chosen that major topic to bring out for people thinking of having braces, I must say that this is very important video.

I never would’ve thought that I would prefer my braces over that Hawley retainer.

Definitely prefer the wired retainers over clear ones. I first got the clear ones, mainly because they were clear. They're incredibly fragile, probably my fault and ended up buying three. I hated the pooling of saliva when having to take them out in public in the case I was eating. Decided to give wired a try and I haven't got a reason to replace them.

Had braces for 10+ years and I'm only now finding out that I'll still be having to deal with a fixed retainer + a removable one. On the verge of a panic attack here.

I had the Hawleys retainers and my orthodontist never told me about the “having trouble speaking “ with them and I was only freshman now I’m in going to junior year and my bottom teeth are cricket and I’m really insecure about them and I’m planning on getting the clear ones or start all over again and go back with the braces. THANK you soo much this video was so helpful!!!

I had to change my hawleys into plastic retainers coz aside from very uncomfortable to the mouth i’m also worried about the after effect of the friction between teeth and the metal wire everytime i have to take on and off. The latter is way much better for me i have no complain wearing it 24/7(except meal times of course) Very informative video and very nice soothing voice which make me subscribed☺️

Well done! I have dry mouth from some of the meds I take. Obviously this condition would be a concern over my choice of retainer. Looking forward to more videos! Thank you Dr. Sarah! 🤗🤗🤗

Here in the Netherlands the common road is a fixed wire retainer in combination with one of the other retainers. I currently have the hawley retainer in my too with the fixed wire on my top and bottom. Though after 5 years my hawley finally broke. I now want the see through retainer so we’ll see what my orthodontist says

Hi, thanks for the video! I got my braces the spring of 8th grade and off the summer of my sophomore year of high school. They only gave me plastic retainers straight away and didn’t suggest anything else. I wasn’t aware of all of these options until my cousins got permanent and plastic retainers; additionally I didn’t even know people still used the Hawley ones. They would often question why I just got the plastic ones saying theirs were way better; it was almost like they were judging me. Anyways, despite all of the ridicule, I still don’t think I’m quite comfortable with getting permanent ones just because they often have problems with them when it comes to eating certain things and with teeth care like flossing, brushing, or even just a regular visit to the dentist. Nevertheless the plastic ones aren’t working for me; they are too delicate so understandable have gotten scratched and chipped up over the years. Now the Hawley ones I may actually consider. The speech thing would not be a factor for me since I only have to wear my retainers at night now. I haven’t been in contact with my orthodontist in a few years though; do you think they can still fit me with a pair?

That's it! I'm going to wear my Hawley at nights and clear plastic during the day cuz speech is IMPOSSIBLE with Hawley and my job involves speech!

Im not sure what kind of retainer to get and thats how I come across this video. Hmm 🤔 Im so use to the Invisalign Ill probably go with the clear retainer that u can remove and keep healthier hygiene 🪥 as far as flossing and gum care. The second option has that metal bar going across the outside of your teeth so no thanks on that choice. Flossing with the bar seems like more work then I care to do at this point. With proper cleaning and care can u keep the clear liners (retainers) “clear” and discolored free? Seems inevitable that I’ll have to purchase a second or even a third set at 475$ each top and bottom. Having nice teeth is like buying a new car. Is it worth it, you betcha it is. Thanks for the video Sarah 😊👍
