In Chapter 7 of 23 in his 2013 Capture Your Flag interview, author and public speaker Simon Sinek answers "What Has the United States Marine Corps Taught You About How a Circle of Safety Motivates Staff?" Sinek shares what Marine Corps basic training has taught him about leading teams more effectively. The United States Marine Corps breaks down the individual and trains them to be interdependent on their fellow Marines. This creates a circle of safety bond of trust that allows Marines to increase team performance in the most difficult situations.

Simon Sinek teaches leaders and organizations how to inspire people. Sinek is the author of two books, "Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Come Together and Others Don't" and "Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action". He is a public speaker, an adjunct professor at Columbia University and a Brandeis University graduate.

Capture Your Flag is a career documentary interview series that interviews 60 up and coming leaders annually to gather knowledge and share a Near Peer Learning experience its audience may use to better plan, pursue and achieve life and career aspirations.

Simon Sinek absolutely knows what he is talking about and I as a Marine with 9 years of service can tell he has done an enormous amount of research about leadership quality and traits of the United States Marine Corps. All branches have leadership qualities but none compare to the Marines.

People prefer to work or live with someone who is not too smart/skillfull but they are trustworthy and respectful, better than with people who is very smart/skillfull but not trustworthy, and disrespecting.

Even people willing to accept someone who is not too smart, but they have great respect and trustworthiness.

Because they are tend to be more loyal, caring, and we can trust your life to them.

Thank you so much for sharing, Shari!  We could not agree more. Please do check out Simon's book "Leaders Eat Last" and his 2014 TED Talk for additional resources beyond our own Capture Your Flag interviews.

Simon. I get what you are saying, but you have no right to act like you know the language of a US Marine. First off you're only saying what you've heard, secondly you don't sound like a Marine. Please don't utilize a tool in which you have never had the privilege of truly understanding. I see it as slander and stolen valor. Sorry if that's extreme, but stick with what you really know good sir. It's always nice seeing things from an outside perspective, but you don't make much sense to me coming form the inside the system. Call me and I'll break it down for you a little bit better.
