For any aluminum parts (alternator for example) I use a product called S100. Started using that on my BMW motorcycle engine cases. S100 is approved by the factory. Instead of steel wool, I use brass wool to limit any bits/pieces that might drop off the steel wool and rust. Learned that trick while refinishing furniture. And finally, for the entire engine bay, I use a new-to-me product by Koch-Chemie called Motorplast. It is a miracle product! Simply spray on and close the hood. It coats any plastic bits ( hoses, engine covers, etc) and at the same time it lays down a protective coating on electrical connection. If interested, do some investigation. It’s really something!
