Can You Eat Moldy Bread If You Toast It?
You want to make a sandwich, but you notice there's a bit of mold on the bread.
So, if you are like me, you probably don't like to waste food, or it could be that you just don't have time to go to the grocery store.
Now, you are wondering, will it be ok if you just cut off the moldy bit and toast the bread?
Although this plan may sound quite reasonable, you SHOULD NOT do that. And here is why.
When you see a little spot of mold on your bread, you are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. The roots of mold that cannot be seen have already reach deep into the bread, and once there is a little spot, then it is likely that the whole loaf is contaminated.
But is it ok to toast the bread? Will that get rid of the mold?
Unfortunately, that is not a good idea either. Toasting your bread will not get rid of the mold because mold produces mycotoxins. Although heat could stop further growth of mold, it would not remove the toxins.
It could actually make the situation even worse. Mold spores could become airborne and not only contaminate your toaster but also other food products in your kitchen.
Also, your bread would still have a moldy taste, even after you have toasted it.
You should never eat moldy bread, even if you cut off the mold and toast it.
To learn how to make your bread last longer and keep it from molding? Is your bread still safe to eat once it's past the expiration date? And what will happen to you if you have accidentally eaten moldy bread?
