Are you just getting started in fly fishing? Matt talks about three things he wishes he knew as he was getting started in the sport. Of course there are always lessons to be learned along the way but he encourages new anglers to embrace that learning process, don't get too focused on what fly to use and to think outside of the trout box.

100%. I will go into a fly shop and just tell the employee what I am fishing for and give me your top 5. Works.

I absolutely love your honesty.
It's a good thing that you as a shop manager has the guts to say one doesn't need boxes full of flies with a lot of different patterns.
"Don't get hung up on a lot of different flies" you said. So true.
All together everybody can learn and get more confidence from your advice.
Subscription😊👍.

Love my local fly shop! Guys there are awesome! However, if I ask them what their confidence patterns are....I'll end up walking out with about 10 dozen flies haha! They are really good fly anglers!

Nice video! I live in central Texas. I will probably never fish for trout. Even so, there are many species of fish here that are a blast to catch on a fly rig. I'm strictly catch and release, de-barbed hooks, etc. It doesn't matter to me if I hook a "trash fish". Heck! Sometimes I target the critters! I *do* tie all of my flies, some traditional and some frankenflies. That makes it all the more enjoyable. Cheers!

I want to make the transition to fly but am scared of the money. Already have thousands in hardware tackle.

Completely agree with the fish for everything. I showed someone a 6 inch streamer and it blew their mind that you can fish for anything other than trout
