It was released as the third and final single from their fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988).

Lyrics:

I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, help me

Darkness
Imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine
Has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

For those of you who don't know what this song is based on. It's based on a old movie called Johnny Got His Gun. Where a soldier losses his arms, legs, nose, eyes and mouth. He is trapped in his body for the rest of his life. Since he has no mouth. He can't communicate with the others around. While he is begging for death. Praying to God to wake him up. You can see small parts of the movie in the music video for One

Metallica’s masterpiece of masterpieces. Never has a metal song conveyed such depth and range between intensity, suffering, fear, and loss.

Metallica helped me go through an MRI and radiation treatment. I am in my 70s and still love their music.

I just love 2:35 when James says “just like a wartime novelty” and Lars does that triple snare hit. It’s just fits so damn nicely right there. Love it!

1:11 to 1:28 might be the most beautiful arrangement that metallica has ever done.

If you've ever been intubated while conscious then then you know one aspect of what this feels like. I remember only being able to blink and move my eyes, but nothing else, from the medication they gave me. My father was above me while I was lying in the hospital bed. He touched the tube that was going down my throat and inadvertently moved it in such a way as to cause severe panic inducing pain in my throat. I could not let anyone know that something was wrong. All I could do was flutter my eyes back and forth and blink as fast as possible but it made no difference. He, nor the doctor present, had any idea that I was in complete distress. I remember being furious that beforehand I had been in a slightly peaceful state and then with one motion, my father put me in hell. He just gave me a sad smile as I was panicking in my mind and then he walked away.

Metallica is the best metal band to ever exist, and I'm positive there will never be a better band

This song sings to me personaly when i was Fucked up shattered face in a coma for 3 1/2 weeks yet still concious of the passage of time. Every prick every small taste of blood and steel. The horrible dream i cant wake up from. I can hear voices i can feel touch, but cant react to it in any way. The Living hell described is just that. And words nor song, can realize all your greatest fears come to life. You want to scream, but your only screaming on the inside, noone can hear you.

I'm a type 1 diabetic diagnosed at 23, still currently 23 turning 24, and I've always wanted to become a Navy SEAL but they don't accept diabetics so the best I can do is advocate for veterans. To my brothers and sisters all around the world, Thank you for your service and sacrifice 🪖🇺🇸 🗺️

I wish Metallica would do a concert near Charlotte I’m 60 and really want to see them live. James is 13 day older than me he’s an amazing vocalist and guitar player.

My favorite guitar hero song ever. You ever played this at midnight with the lights off just the tv on and killing this solo over and over over? Never gone forget 🔥🔥🔥

Love this song, I can really relate to it. I'm 37 now but Back in my twenties I really felt the lyrics and this was my life. It's crazy how some songs can hit you right in the heart. Overall one of the greatest songs Metallica ever did.

This song reminds me the time I was in hospital after I lost my baby....I arrived there almost dead.... I still love this song even if it brings me back that feeling....

watching that shooting star go backwards and forwards over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and.... over... again is fucking hypnotizing.

it's in the top left corner of the screen if you haven't noticed it, somehow.
