Metallica - One lyrics

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. The current line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Previous members of the band include former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band Megadeth) and former bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.

Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed the band as one of the founding "big four" of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax.[1] The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim, with its third album Master of Puppets (1986) described as one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. Metallica achieved substantial commercial success with their eponymous fifth album (also known as The Black Album), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience.

This song took inspiration from the book and film "Johnny Got His Gun". An anti-war film about the *true* effects of war. The army and doctors keep him alive. He has no limbs, 1 sense left (touch) and no facial features anymore. But he still has mental capacity. Yet he's kept alive against his will despite using morse code to communicate that he doesn't want to live anymore. It's a film everyone should watch at least once in their life. It's a great film, very meaningful. Give it a watch if you haven't already.

Such a relatable song in those times, and people were saying metal genre is evil but they're speaking the truth. Fuck war.

"Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolte horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell ! "

My father just passed away due to cancer, and regardless of my family being highly religious I’ll be requesting my uncle who plays the guitar to jam out with me one last time at his funeral. He was the main reason I have the music taste I have to this day and will be forever grateful.

This song really hits hard for me. I was 2 years too young to go to Vietnam so I was very fortunate but I had many friends that went and they came back totally broken and lost.

I'm a musician and I go to the VA Hospital here in Seattle and I take my guitar with me.

I play music for the men and women that are in bed or walking or whatever and it's really a great bridge to some very meaningful conversations.

Sometimes I play my guitar and I sing and sometimes they'll sing with me and I can see the weight lifting off of them.

I feel blessed to be able to do this and to have these wounded and largely forgotten Warriors open up and tell me their stories and tell me of their pain and sometimes of their happiness but not often.

I would encourage anybody that's a musician or an artist or just anybody that cares to find your VA hospital in your area or any kind of va Institution and go there and volunteer in some manner.

I guarantee you those servicemen and women will be overjoyed that somebody cares enough to come and just sit and talk with them for an hour.

I remember my uncle had a stroke that almost killed him a few years back. Fortunately he managed to survive and is pretty much completely better now and I'm thankful for that. He's always been a Metallica fan, but he told me once that when he was in the hospital he felt like he was in the music video of One. Most of the lyrics actually related to his experience as well. Vicariously it's such a scary thing to go through but I'm just thankful my uncle is still alive and seems to be doing better now.

My favorite part is the solo climax at 6:20 into the brutal outro with the harmony part. Turn up the volume to absolute maximum. The sudden silence after the last notes is introspective. If I play this song in the car I just turn off the sound after it finishes & enjoy the contrasting silence. One of the best songs ever made regardless of genres

My dad originally got me hooked on Metallica when I was 6 yrs old.. he stopped listening to them unfortunately. But I’m 30 now and still always jam to them whenever I got music playing. I’ll be rocking to them til I die. Idc how old I get. Good thing is I got my 6 & 8 year old boys hooked now, maybe they will pass it on to their children. Much love to the best metal band ever born!

“Hold my breathe as I wish for death, oh please god, help me”

Even though this is a song about war I’m pretty sure most people most people with depression and suicidal thoughts can appreciate this line.
