André Lauren Benjamin (born May 27, 1975), better known by his stage name André 3000, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, he is best known for being one-half of the Southern hip hop duo Outkast, which he formed in 1992 alongside fellow Atlanta-based rapper Big Boi. Benjamin is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time.

As part of Outkast, the duo's six studio albums were each met with critical and commercial success, spawning hit singles including "Ms. Jackson", "Roses", "So Fresh, So Clean", and "Elevators (Me & You)", among others. Their fifth, a double album titled Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003), contained a solo single performed by Benjamin: "Hey Ya!", which peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. After the duo split in 2007, Benjamin became less active as a solo act compared to Big Boi, although he made several highly-acclaimed guest appearances on releases by other artists; such activity has earned him an additional three Grammy Awards among eight nominations as a solo artist. Benjamin signed with Epic Records to release his debut studio album, New Blue Sun (2023), an instrumental recording showcasing his performances on flute.

A fraudulent music company is copyright striking this video and having it taken down illegally in 5 days. At that point unless I can get them to stop it will be viewable only on Nebula:

I ain't mad at 3000 man. He's not blind he sees what the industry does to people. He got out and still kept his self respect and integrity as a man. Good for you 3!!

I can't help but remember his cartoon Class of 3000, where... a big throughline of it is "The industry won't make you happy, fame won't make you happy. Make music for the joy of music."

This is how a health exit from the limelight looks. We need to start framing it like that instead of framing it like there's a problem. At the end of the day, he was smart and left before he fell off or before it killed him. He decided to be free and live life. The man can walk around the mall all by himself. Very few celebrities of his caliber have been able to achieve that. I consider that a success and I'm happy for him.

I once met Andre 300o in an alleyway in Manhattan when I was in 6th grade and he was doing a photoshoot. Right around that time he was my favorite rapper because I had aquemini and me and my dad used to bump it in the car. Me and a couple other kids from the area waited for him to come out of his trailer and when he did I said "I know you don't need to hear this from me but keep being creative". And he replied "well its gud ta hea it fruhm you" with that southern Georgia drawl. I'll never forget that moment. Its interesting he and I are similar in our complicated upbringing so it all makes sense now why I connected so much with his music and why we shared that moment.

I respect Big Boi for holding it down and supporting Andre through the many different phases he went through. Big lost out on some opportunities due to Andre, but he never switched up on him. I appreciate this video very much

OutKast is the REAL DEAL, their flow was untouchable and infinitely unique. They rapped like jazz musicians

Andre is an artist, and artists are not afraid to lead society and contribute to culture. They're also brave enough to straight up LEAVE a culture that thrives on hatred. He chose personal peace over playing the fame game. ❤

Met Andre once, serving him dinner (I think for his son Seven's birthday, they were with Erykah). Gave off extremely kind & modest vibes, it was really a delight to get to speak with him even just in that professional context & keeping it short since he was with family.
I got to mention quickly while seeing him out the front door that his music had meant a lot to me for many years & he thanked me for saying so.

Spent brief time with Andre in Japan last year and he was playing the eukelele and talking about AI art. Seemed like the kindest, good vibes, introverted deep intellectual and I was star struck.

Social anxiety and hyper sensitivity disorder. Everything makes sense now. Salute king, we were there for the whole journey.

This makes alot of sense because social anxiety is a real thing. We got to give Big Boi his flowers too because he had Andre's back through it all and is an icon in his own right..

Andre is an old soul and eccentric on top of his social anxiety. There is no one like him. OutKast is one of my all time fav. Big boi is great too. So glad they met and gave us what they did. It was cool to run across this trip back in time.

Dammit, man, a documentary isn’t supposed to make you have an existential crisis- his life resonates so so much with mine.. my god, I’m in tears watching this.. I went through all he did.

Being a skater in Memphis in the 90s in the hoods during the crack era. Going to schools getting jumped, fighting, seeing many of my friends have their lives taken- never fitting in.. I made music, I drew, painted, rapped, tried heavy metal, punk, and all this was in Memphis during the 90s & up.. never truly fitting in.. we used to live in key west, going to school growing up there to my parents divorcing and living in Memphis.. I don’t think ppl can understand how much of a culture shock that was.

But, I wish I was strong, and brave, as Andre.. I gave in, I spiraled.. sold dope, went to jail, got shot three different times, smoked, popped pills, soft, and drank.. became a shell of myself.. mannnn now I’m older with kids, a beautiful wife, and still feeling like I never really got to do what I wanted with my life.. but I’m blessed.. daaamn man I’m in fxcking tears, this documentary man this documentary man

Oh god..

This is truly your best work, well in my opinion.. I never felt like this over a documentary..

God bless you, man! Man thank you

I’m a huge fan of OutKast, especially Andre Benjamin, and I see why I am such a huge fan now.
