How to Test Car Relays

How to test a car relay and how a car relay works. In this video we use a Ford relay and an Audi for examples. All you really need to do this is a multimeter set on resistance, however, a 12 volt car battery could be useful. If a car battery isn't available, you can manually close the coil in the relay.

Agree with Raphael.  Clear, succinct, lack of babble, good lighting and a steady camera.  Thanks!

I think the reason he is showing you how to do it with a car battery because its what will be handy for you while you're outside trying to fix your ride, lol.

Great video and I learned a lot... but better connect +12V to terminal 86 not 85 as per the DIN standard. If you have a relay with a diode in it and connect it like shown in the video, you will damage it (like I did).

Many 12 VDC units will operate for testing purposes using a 9 Volt battery.

Great video my friend. How can we know whether 85 or 86 is the positive or negative terminal to hook up to the battery?

Actually, you can test one of these with a 9 volt radio battery for 12 volt relays, and two of these in series for 24 volt relays. Much lighter than a car battery.

I have problem with my Ford Focus 2010, do not want to start bi relay clicking. When I remove negative 12V and reconnect relay car start juat fine. Why this happen? Can relay be bugy?

What do you do if you have six erminals and don't know which ones are power terminals. Can't go by the wire size or color. The only one I am sure of is the ground.
