Could NATO membership for Ukraine end the war in the country? | DW News

NATO has said that Ukraine will one day become a member of the collective defense pact – but that can't happen as long as there is a war raging on its territory. One prominent voice has floated the idea of making Kyiv a member – but without areas under Russian occupation. But would allies even consider taking on a new member with a built-in conflict with Moscow? DW's Teri Schultz reports.

For more on this, we talk to Fabrice Pothier. He is a political expert and the CEO of the Rasmussen Global consultancy, which has worked in and with Ukraine. He is also a former NATO director of policy planning.

thats the reason why the war started in the first place lol

it's practically impossible because every member has to agree, and as war is already going on, there would be members who are not willing to carry burden of war e.g. turkey 😂😂😂😂

Article 5 will not bring the american military into direct conflict with russia. For the american people, Ukraine is a european issue and not an american issue. The american people will never support a devastating war with russia over ukraine. European poltical aristocracy must be nuts.

This war started because of Ukraine's willing to join NATO, I don't see how accepting Ukrain in NATO will make things better, actually it will make everything much worse than now, and Rasmussen is an absolute lunatic lol

The politicians who wanted to expand NATO to the Russian border should be in jail.

NATO membership for Russia actually would make much more sense. Not kidding.

Nice to see Putin and Zelensky 101% united on at least one subject. They both totally reject this idea.

Ukraine re-taking territory is a dream

Previously I supported Ukraine but now I am out of it because of double standard of western countries. Every agenda is for the benefit of western countries but not the benefit of normal civillians

My view of point 100% Ukraine can’t take back their occupied Territory, but they will loose more territory that’s button line in future

NATO continues to breach their original agreement with Russia. They are not to gain Eastern Europeans to NATO - this was their original agreement prior to the forming of NATO. Russia have every right to defend aggression towards their country.

Russia already stated it is unacceptable for Ukraine to join Nato so the Special military operation will not stop until Nato gives up it's ambitions in Ukraine

it would only make things worse... We do not want them in NATO! Hello from Denmark

This is an impractical idea. Article 5 obligates NATO members to actually defend Ukraine, not just speed up industrial production. It would mean NATO and Russia would be at war.

People need to learn a little bit more about geo politics and human behaviour before they consider ideas like this… what seems like a simple solution has more potential to be a disastrous error

I thought it was pretty obvious that Ukraine will never be in the alliance as they have territorial conflicts this is the same reason Morocco has failed to join .

Austria is neutral, wouldn't it make much more sense a neutral Ukraine? April 2022 was almost so fare, but US economic interests were more important. And yes, there would be 500, 000 young Ukrainians still alive. Thank you Nuland, thank you Boris and thank MSM as DW.

Those occupied areas belong to the people living in them;not to their enemy in Kyiv. They have already decided not to be part of Kyiv. That is supported by UN charter self determination.
