Don't get a root canal before watching this!

Ideally, you will never need a root canal but if you do you want to be informed of your options and how the procedure works.

A root canal is a dental treatment to preserve a tooth with an infected or inflamed pulp due to a deep cavity or trauma.

Despite its bad name, the dreaded root canal is not supposed to be painful.

However, root canals carry some risks. There is also much controversy about this treatment, which has caused concern and even fear.

This article will discuss what a root canal is, how to know if it’s the right treatment for you, its safety, what to expect, and more.

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
Root canal therapy is a type of dental procedure to preserve a tooth after the tooth’s pulp has become infected or inflamed. This is usually due to a deep cavity or trauma to the teeth or face.

The pulp is the tooth’s inner soft tissue containing connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels.

In a root canal procedure, your dentist or endodontist will clean out the infected tissue from the pulp chamber, then disinfect, fill, and seal the tooth. A crown will be placed over the tooth to preventing chipping or fracture.

I had a dentist say I needed a root canal 20 years ago, and I told him I wanted to think about it. I went to another dentist a week later, and said he could do the crown without a root canal and it worked fine. That was 20 years ago, and I still have the same old crown with no problems. I think it is a financial thing myself

A root canal kills the tooth and then you have dead tooth in your mouth. Each tooth has over 2 miles of tubules or "canals" in the tooth that will house bacteria in your tooth since the blood supply has been removed during the root canal. This will always leach in to your system and can affect your organs over time. I had a root canal and for 10 years I had ear nose and throat infections every couple of months. I would take antibiotics and get better then start the process all over again. My doctor and dentist ran tests and both said I was fine but could not explain why I would catch everything from everyone and end up with infections non stop. After fighting with my dentist to pull the tooth, he sent me to a orthopedic surgeon who put me on a dental CT machine. Within 10 minutes of being there, he came in and told me that my tooth was infected all they way down in to my bone. He pulled the tooth and I have not had a single infection since then and it's been about 7 years. I never get sick now either even when my kids are getting sick and I actually have a lot of vacation time again which used to be negative. There was a great article explaining all this that recently disappeared so that is why I am taking the time to right this. I told another person about this and her uncle had been getting sick and could not figure out why. She told me that he had just had a root canal. She told him and he had his tooth removed and was well again in next to no time. The threat is real. I am so glad I found out why and life is so much better not being sick so much. Best of luck to you if you are reading this!

Always had very bad teeth and had my first root canal at 13. By the time I was 22, I had most of my teeth root canaled. They lasted a good 40 years, even though I had some recapped later on. Now I am 65 and moving on to upper dentures, but I still have some lower teeth left. I probably could have bought a house with the money spent on teeth, but to be pain free and a decent smile means everything.

Had my first root canal in 1984. In October of 2022, the crown fell off. To the dentist I went, he cemented the crown back on and I'm still going 38+ years later.

If done properly by a qualified specialist, root canals are no more painful than a filling - specialists are expensive though, good dentistry ought to be affordable for all

I had a root canal some years back. It was recommended. The alternative was to have the tooth removed, which causes surrounding teeth to move back, which could be problematic. I don't think my health has suffered because of the root canal, but I hated the procedure, which involved 3 visits and hours in the chair. Tortuous.

I think the bigger issue is why is it hard finding a dentist that is trustworthy and why in the US it cost so much out of pocket

I hate when dentist say “We need to save the tooth” but tooth dead once root canal is preformed so it just sounds so manipulative to me now.

I ensured I went to a good dentist no matter the price must say I've been sticking to this dentist for 2 years and never ever been in pain 🙃

Most pain I’ve had from the root canal is from the dentist and dental assistant pulling my mouth open and using the suction hose and sore jaw. No real pain in the tooth afterwards.

i just want to say how scared i am. my dentist was so rude and unprofessional to me. i’m 15, and i’ve had this tooth pain for abt 2 months. i couldn’t see a dentist bc they were all booked and money is tight at home, and many family issues were going on. i finally went; and my dentist was rude and practically shamed me for needing a root canal and having other cavities. he went to say “which do you want to do, the root canal or the extraction” i said “probably the root canal” and he said disrespectfully “i was not speaking to you, i was talking to your mom.” my mom was beyond pissed! he didn’t explain to me the procedure or anything. in fact that’s basically all he said. i was so upset, and now my nerves are crazy bc he made me feel terrible abt myself and didn’t even explain anything to me when i was clearly nervous. overall he sucks. but his office is all we can afford :( now i’m scared to get the root canal. it’s my very last tooth on the top left side of my mouth.

I’m 51 and the most I’ve had are fillings (knock on wood). I brush and floss daily, try to stay away from sugar and sticky foods. And I visit the dentist every 6 months. Both my parents had dentures early in life and that was enough for me to try hard to keep my teeth.

Don’t ever ignore painful teeth! I’m a retired nurse. I had a patient that had a brain abscess. It was from an infected tooth, that the patient didn’t get taken care of.

Nope. I had so many expensive painful root canals. They all eventually failed. I pulled all of my teeth because I was tired of pain and dental work. Dentures may not be as good as real teeth and they take some getting used to. But at least my pain and anxiety is gone
