The Aftermath of the Helene flooding of Erwin Day 1

It's been a solemn morning as my friend Michael Baker and our group joined first responders early at dawn in Erwin to start the long process of surveying damage so plans of action can be implemented. We've pledged our full support over the next few weeks documenting with photos and video for the town of Erwin and an other municipality (Elizabethton, Hampton, Greene County) that we can be of help to. 6 or 7 years ago, I broke down in Erwin and had to spend two days waiting on repairs. It was the most unlikely place to become my favorite southern town because frankly, I'd never even heard of it until then. It did though., it became a destination for me.

Those two days are some of the fondest travel memories that I'll ever have. The people of that town are top notch. Everyone from the cashiers at restaurants and stores to city officials treated this weary traveller better than I have ever been treated in my life.

They welcomed me in with open arms and included me as one of their own. It truly showed me the value and make up of the great people of that little city. My prayers and my love are with the people of Erwin.

I was in the hospital at the time. Ended up on the roof. Everything was just a normal day till 10AM. I came back from my break and water was coming up quickly. I went in and was told we were evacuating immediately. Was in my car and headed out by 10:10 but it was too late. Water covered the drive way and was sweeping cars away if they tried to get past it. By 10:30 we were on the roof.Thanks for the video.

Last September my wife and I came to Erwin to get peace and quiet from our hectic life. What can I say, we fell in love with the town and the people. We bought property in Kingsport this year. As a former mountain boy from PA, Tennessee I will be home soon and will help rebuild. Erwin I will help in any way I can. God bless all of you and praying for the missing to be found safe.

It's priceless what you're providing, thank you. For those of us yearning to know the scope. I live in far, SW Virginia, just about 1 and a half hours north. This is one of my favorite hiking towns.
